[01] Greek envoy briefs US officials, diplomats
Greece's Ambassador to the United States, Alexandros Mallias, on Monday
briefed members of Congress along with US State Department and National
Security Council officials regarding developments in the Balkans as
well as Greek policy in the region.
Mallias referred to "a consistent Greek policy in support of European
aspirations of Balkan countries? amid the context of a strategic policy
between the European Union and the United States.
He also emphasised Bulgaria's and Romania's accession to the European
Union and spoke of "the leading role of Greece in the energy and other
sectors, and in general, in the processes of the region's economic
integration."
The Greek ambassador cited what he called propaganda by the government
of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), presenting school
and military academy maps of the neighbouring country as well as
statements by FYROM officials showing that the use of the name
Alexander the Great for the Skopje airport is part of a wider framework
of irredentist propaganda by FYROM.
