  • [01] Inner cabinet focuses on gender equality issues

The inner cabinet on Tuesday focused on interior ministry issues, as the high-ranking government meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis.

On his part, Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos and the general secretary for gender equality briefed the inner cabinet on the implementation of a gender equality programme.

Pavlopoulos stressed that the government has hammered out a well-organised plan and focused on specific actions to achieve gender equality and to meet goals set out in the Lisbon Strategy. The minister stressed that 75 percent of goals set have been met, pointing out that the international community and EU have acknowledged the speedy adjustment made, referring characteristically to issues of trafficking in persons, domestic violence, protection of women in the workplace and sexual harassment.

Pavlopoulos pointed to the important steps made concerning the employment of women, the support of female immigrants and women belonging to sensitive population groups.

The employment rate for women was at 43 percent and the set goal is 48.9 percent by 2008 (currently it stands at 48.1 percent), he stressed.

The unemployment rate for women was 16.5 percent when the New Democracy government came to power and has already has dropped considerably, he said, adding however that Greece is still falling behind the EU average and therefore, a greater effort is necessary.

[02] Bakoyannis on Iran crisis, after meeting PM

Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis met with Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis and Deputy Foreign Minister Yiannis Valinakis before a cabinet meeting on Tuesday to discuss foreign policy planning for the next six months as well as a new agency being set up by the foreign ministry.

Replying to a question about Iran and speculation of possible military activity before Good Friday, the minister expressed a hope that "the basic principle that will prevail in all countries of the EU is that problems are solved through dialogue and diplomacy, and that this is the only advisable course to follow with Iran as well."

"Iran has caused concern in the international community as a country, nevertheless, the solution to these problems must be given through diplomatic avenues," she stressed.
