[01] PASOK leader, president discuss wildfires
Main opposition PASOK party leader George Papandreou requested and held
a telephone conversation with President Karolos Papoulias on Monday.
According to an announcement by PASOK, "the president of PASOK
requested a meeting with the President of the Republic and once again
stressed the need for a meeting of political party leaders under the
chairmanship of the President of the Republic."
Papandreou toured the ancient Olympia archaeological site in the early
morning hours on Monday, where he praised the professionalism,
dedication and self-sacrifice of fire-fighters battling dozens of
wildfires around Greece.
Flames were literally stopped at the gates of the historic site on
Sunday.
[02] Probe into possible terrorism link with fires ordered
An Athens prosecutor responsible for issues concerning terrorism and
organised crime has ordered an urgent preliminary investigation by the
director of the special crimes unit to probe whether suspected
instances of arson in the country's forests this summer are subject to
a criminal code article related to terrorism.
Scores of wildfires erupted throughout the Peloponnese and southern
Greece over a two to three-day period, some within minutes of each
other in remote rural regions.
