[01] White House nominates new US envoy to Greece
The White House on Wednesday announced the nomination of Daniel V.
Speckhard as the next US ambassador to Greece, replacing Charles Ries,
whose term expires in mid-June.
Speckard is a career member of the senior executive service, and
currently serves as a special advisor at the US embassy in Baghdad,
having previously served as attache at the embassy. His nomination for
the post by US president George W. Bush was formally announced on
Wednesday, and the nomination has been forwarded to the US Senate for
approval.
Speckhard studied at the University of Wisconsin, in his home state.
"The President has nominated Daniel V. Speckhard, of Wisconsin, to be
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of
America to Greece. Mr. Speckhard currently serves as Special Advisor at
the United States Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq. Prior to this, he served as
Deputy Chief of Mission at the United States Embassy in Baghdad.
Earlier in his career, he served as Director of Policy Planning for the
Secretary General of NATO. Mr. Speckhard received his bachelor's and
master's degrees from the University of Wisconsin," a White House
announcement read.
Ries has already departed Athens for a high-level US diplomatic post in
Iraq.
