    The Thursday edition of Athens' dailies at a glance

    The performances of Greek athletes at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and doping incidents, EU and NATO relations with Russia and the arrest of escaped convict Vassilis Paleokostas were the main front-page items in Thursday's newspapers.

    ADESMEFTOS TYPOS: "The most corrupt public services: Town Planning, hospitals, tax offices, transport ministry services", according to report by the non-governmental organization (NGO) 'Transparency International Hellas'.

    APOGEVMATINI: "Four suspects in Mylonas (then Federation of Industries of Northern Greece-SBBE chief) abduction (in early June, who was released from captivity two weeks later after his family paid an unspecified ransom) arrested in Thessaloniki (including escaped convict Vassilis Paleokostas, who is believed to be the mastermind of the abduction)".

    AVGHI: "NATO sinking in Afghanistan".

    AVRIANI: "Detentions and summonses over the immense political-financial Siemens graft scandal commencing".

    CHORA: "US planting missiles (global missile defense shield) in Europe - Condoleezza (US secretary of State Rice) signed agreement (with Poland for deployment of part of the missile defense system there) for new...tension".

    ELEFTHERI ORA: "Greek National Basketball Team loses 80-78 to Argentina (in Olympic quarterfinal game), and did not manage to make us smile amid all our problems".

    ELEFTHEROS TYPOS: "The quandary is clear: What do we do now? - Greece called on to set out its role and to decide how it will manage its interests in the new Cold War landscape".

    ELEFTHEROTYPIA: The newspaper's top story focused on former merchant marine minister Aristotelis Pavlidis' alleged involvement in a scandal involving a prominent shipowner.

    ESTIA: "The new taxes unacceptable, so long as tax evasion is not curbed".

    ETHNOS: "Tax rebate for thousands of buyers of first homes".

    KATHIMERINI: "Mylonas' abductors in the hands of the police - Vassilis Paleokostas arrested in hideout".

    PONTIKI (weekly): "Crooks, hypocrites and merchants of death - Doping: The reality, the hypocrisy, the interests".

    RIZOSPASTIS: "Resistance alert must sound against the materialization of the dangerous plan" after the signing of the US-Poland agreement.

    TA NEA: "Resign, five ministers say (to New Democracy MP and former merchant marine minister Aristotelis Pavlidis) - Ta Nea opinion poll among top ND cadres".

    TO VIMA: "Let them topple me, the painful measures will be imposed - Karamanlis determined to ignore the rebels".
