  • [01] Economy minister meets Chinese ambassador

    Economy, Competitiveness and Shipping Minister Louka Katseli held a meeting with Chinese Ambassador to Athens Luo Linquan on Wednesday.

    "We are very pleased that the honourable ambassador of China, Luo Linquan, visited the ministry today. It is the first visit to our ministry by a diplomat. We had the opportunity of discussing all the issues of our cooperation, cooperation to which both sides are looking forward to. We want to develop economic cooperation with China, to strengthen our commercial and investments relations for the mutual benefit of both countries. We believe in this friendship and cooperation and we shall both do everything possible to resolve whatever problems have been created and move ahead for constructive coooperation," Katseli said after the meeting.

    [02] Lesvos Petrified Forest receives EDEN award

    The 'Petrified Forest of Lesvos" on the Greek island of Lesvos was among 22 European destinations selected for the 2009 'European Destinations of Excellence" or EDEN network awards, that were handed out by the European Commission during a ceremony held in Brussels.

    The ceremony was held to coincide European Day of Tourism last week.

    Lesvos local authorities set up a special pavilion to promote the Petrified Forest and other attractions on the island, which was visited by European Commission Vice-President Guenter Verheugen last Friday.

    [03] Parliament president elected

    PASOK former minister Philippos Petsalnikos was elected parliament president on Thursday.

    In a secret ballot was elected with 160 votes out of a total 299 MPs that voted, receiving 8 votes more than the ruling PASOK party's seats in the 300-member unicameral parliament of Greece.

    Also, 130 blank ballots and one invalid ballot were cast.

    [04] ASE opening: Marginal decline

    Equity prices were declining at the opening of trade on Thursday on the Athens Stock Exchange (ASE), with the basic share price index down 0.07 percent, standing at 2,895.01 points at 10:55 a.m., and turnover at 72.5 million euros.

    Individual sector indices were moving mostly downward, with the biggest gains in Insurance, up 5.49 percent; Health, up 1.28 percent; and Food & Beverage, up 1.14 percent.

    The biggest losses were in Chemicals, down 1.71 percent; Industrial Products, down 1.60 percent; and Raw Materials, down 0.83 percent.

    The FTSE/ASE 20 index for blue chip and heavily traded stocks was down 0.25 percent, the FTSE/ASE MID 40 index was down 0.42 percent, and the FTSE/ASE-80 small cap index was down 1.03 percent.

    Of the stocks moved, 41 were up, 87 were down, and 29 were unchanged.
