  • [01] Samaras: Hope exists and dawn will not be late

Main opposition New Democracy party leader Antonis Samaras stressed that many fear the future in crucial times, adding that one must not let fear overshadow his heart.

"You must always remember that the thickest darkness is shortly before the first light appears. Light will begin to appear in 2010. Hope exists and dawn will not be late," he said.

Samaras underlined that 2009 was difficult for many and wished that 2010 will be better for all.

"In the new year New Democracy will show its new face, it shall inspire with its proposals, it shall stop all that it must stop, it shall promote all that it must promote and it shall win the wager on behalf of society and of young people in particular, on behalf of our Greece. For this reason do not fear for Greece. It has boundless forces inside it. You must believe in yourselves. You must believe in your capabilities. After the crisis a new and better page for Greece shall open," the ND leader added in his message for the New Year.

[02] Fraktos Forest, the only virgin forest in Greece

The old-growth forest of Fraktos, situated in the northeastern part of the Prefecture of Dramas in northern Greece under the highest summit of central Rhodope Mountains with an altitude of 1,953 meters, is the only Virgin Forest in the country and among the most unique in Europe. The Fraktos Forest had been declared a military zone for years and grew following only the rules of nature due to the fact that no humans had intervened. The human presence was limited to such a degree that the forest ecosystem was unaffected for at least 500 years.

The woodland was registered as a virgin forest in 1979 and a year later was declared protected monument of nature.

The Fraktos Forest fauna is home to 100 species of birds and 32 species of mammals including all rare animal species in Greece and Europe.

[03] KKE: 2010 can be a good year

In a New Year message the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) underlined that "2010 can be a good year for workers, the self-employed and the poverty stricken farmers."

KKE pointed out in the message that "this can happen only if they face united the anti-popular storm launched against them by the government and the plutocracy, with the support of New Democracy."

    [04] Karatzaferis on New Year

Popular Orthodox Rally (LAOS) president George Karatzaferis on a message for the New Year said "I would like to wish that in 2010, all of us, the entire political leadership, will rise to the occasion. It is certain that in 2009 some did not satisfy you and some disappointed you. In 2010 we must all do our best to have a better year and to build a better future for our children."
