  • [01] Eurogroup: 110 bln support package OK'd

(ANA-MPA) -- The Greek government on Sunday announced a fiscal adjustment programme for the country, envisioning a 36.4-billion-euro reduction of the budget deficit over three years to bring down the current 13.6 percent deficit to under 3 percent of GDP by 2014, in the wake of nearly two weeks of negotiations with EU Commission, European Central Bank (ECB) and (ANA-MPA) International Monetary Fund (IMF) officials in Athens.

The "laundry list" of state spending cuts, increased taxes, social security reforms and labour market deregulation pave the way for activation of an EU-IMF support mechanism for the Greek economy, agreed to last month. (ANA-MPA)

[02] Motorist kills himself falsely believing that he caused fatal accident

(ANA-MPA) -- A 42-year-old motorist committed suicide falsely believing that he caused a fatal accident when his car collided with a motorcycle on Monday. (ANA-MPA)

His body was found hanging from an olive tree, near the town of Oinoe, north of Athens, some 80 meters away from the scene of the accident. (ANA-MPA)

The motorcycle driver, a Pakistani migrant, was only slightly injured and was taken to a hospital in Livadia, central Greece. (ANA-MPA)

[03] US support for Greek measures

WASHINGTON (ANA-MPA) -- US President Barack Obama expressed his satisfaction to Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou on Sunday over what he termed the "ambitious" reforms and restructuring package announced by the Greek government the same day.

According to a White House press release here, Obama spoke by phone with Papandreou, with both leaders reportedly agreeing over the need for the urgent implementation of economic reforms.

Additionally, the US president -- who enjoys very high popularity ratings amongst the Greek public -- expressed satisfaction over the significant support, as he said, announced by Greece's fellow eurozone partners and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

[04] Credit rating worsens in '09

The survey, based on a sampleo f 21,743 enterprises -societe anonymes and limited companies- in the manufacturing, commerce and services sectors, showed that 23.4 pct of all enterprises saw their credit ratings worsen last year, while 16.91 pct improved its credit rating in 2009.
