BRUSSELS (ANA-MPA) -- Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou met with his counterpart from the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (fYRoM), Nikola Gruevski, here on Friday, with the nagging "name issue" expectedly discussed by the two premiers.

The one-and-a-half-hour meeting over a working lunch had been requested by Gruevski and was held in a good climate, according to reports. Sources said both sides also reaffirmed their commitment to UN-sponsored process under mediator Matthew Nimetz.

In statements afterwards, Greek government spokesman Giorgos Petalotis said the two leaders proceeded to a review of the process to resolve the "name issue", without however "touching on the substance of talks".

"On our side, there is a clear volition towards achieving progress and we consider that direct contacts can create a better climate, which will have a positive impact on the negotiating process," Petalotis added.

The spokesman also noted that a mutually acceptable solution is indispensable towards reinforcing stability in the region, while it would open fYRoM's road to the Euro-Atlantic institutions.
