  • [01] PM chairs meeting on Athens' city centre; problem of illegal migration

(ANA-MPA) -- Prime Minister George Papandreou will announce specific initiatives for Athens' historical city centre in early March, it was decided on Friday following a lengthy meeting he chaired in Parliament.

According to reports, the meeting focused on the adoption of economic incentives to lure back residents to the specific area, while also touching on the problem of homeless and drug addicts congregating in certain districts and on the active participation of the City of Athens.

It was underlined that the number of work stamps necessary for the renewal of immigrant resident permits should be reduced, while the prime minister called for the intensification of relevant procedures and the drastic reduction of red tape to ensure that problems will be solved in a more effective manner.

Solution of the problem of illegal migrants that are long-time residents was characterised as urgent. (ANA-MPA)

[02] Pilot eMPOWER project completed; ANA-MPA participation

The results of the eMPOWER project and an overall assessment of the project, which focused on citizens' active participation in common and critical environmental issues, were presented in a conference held in Athens on Feb. 10-11, with the active participation of the ANA-MPA.

The two-year eMPOWER programme, an "eParticipation trial project" co-funded by the European Commission under the EU eParticipation Preparatory Action, was launched on Jan. 1, 2009.

Its purpose was to motivate and strengthen the involvement of NGOs and citizens in the decision-making process on environmental issues at the national and European level by providing method and tools for supporting citizens' participation and collection of signatures to promote relevant public initiatives.

Online voting will continue to take place at www.ep-empower.eu http://www.ep-empower.eu< on issues concerning climate change, genetically modified organisms, water resources and waste management.
