  • [01] Credit expansion shrinks

(ANA-MPA) -- Credit expansion shrank further in January this year as bank lending towards the private sector of the economy continued falling, the Bank of Greece said on Friday.

The central bank, in a report, said that credit expansion was a negative -0.3 pct in January, from -0.1 pct in December 2010, reflecting lower loans to enterprises and an intensifying de-leverage in Greek households, with new mortgage and consumer loans significantly lower compared with repayment of existing debt. [02] Car registrations down

Car registrations continued falling in January this year, for a decline of 54.5 pct in the first two months of 2011, the independent Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) said on Friday. The statistics service said registrations of passenger vehicles were down 58 pct in the January-February period.

Car registrations fell 46.8 pct in January (both new and used) compared with the same month last year, while registrations in the two-month period totalled 23,060 vehicles, down 54.5 pct compared with the corresponding period in 2010. The market had recorded an 8.5 pct increase in the first two months of 2010.

Registrations of motorcycles totalled 6,145 units in the January-February period this year, down 10.9 pct compared with 2010, after recording a 19.5 pct decline in the first two months of 2010.

Car market executives said they hope that a government measure to subsidize the renewal of the car fleet in the country could offer some comfort and reverse a dramatic decline in sales.

    [03] PRC praise for evacuation

BEIJING (ANA-MPA) -- Chinese Transport Minister Li Shenglin, in a letter of appreciation to Marine Affairs, Islands & Fisheries Minister Yiannis Diamantidis, has expressed the sincere gratitude and respect of the Chinese government and people for Greece's efforts in the evacuation of several thousand Chinese nationals from Libya over the past 10 days.

"With the strong support of the Greek government, and, mainly under your supervision, more than 13,000 Chinese have reached Crete so far," Li stressed.

Additionally, he praised Diamantidis' recent visit to China, noting that the practical cooperation between the two ministries will lead to more important achievements, while he expressed a hope that the two sides will jointly promote cooperation in the shipping sector.
