  • [01] PM in Brussels on Thursday

    ANA-MPA/Prime Minister George Papandreou will leave for Brussels on Thursday to participate in the two-day European Council session.

    The prime minister's programme is the following: Thursday June 23: 7:00 p.m. Meeting of heads of state and government with the European Parliament president, 7:45 p.m. family photo and 8:15 p.m. working dinner. Friday June 24: 10:00 a.m. European Council's first working session, 1:00 p.m. Working luncheon, 2:45 p.m. European Council's second working session and 5:15 press conference.

    The law executing the Medium-Term Fiscal Strategic Programme on Wednesday received the cabinet's unanimous approval before being tabled to parliament by government vice-president and Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos on Friday.ana-mpa

    Addressing the cabinet earlier, Prime Minister George Papandreou had stated that "the vote of confidence given to the government constitutes confirmation of the mandate to continue the tough effort we have started 20 months ago." ana-mpa

    He said that the country is fighting a tough battle through a continuous and hard negotiation with the EU partners, stressing that the battle is fought for the country's salvation and change.

    Papandreou underlined that the government is trying to ensure that the country will receive the necessary funds and make the debt sustainable in a tough, unstable and often uneasy international environment.

    [02] Soccer fixing arrests

    ANA-MPA/Ten people were arrested Wednesday night in a police probe of soccer match-fixing, in a coordinated police operation in several parts of Greece.

    Nine arrests, including well-known names, were initially made by the Attica Security Police's Organised Crime Squad in the framework of an operation that took place in Attica and in other parts of Greece on Wednesday afternoon, following a prosecutor's investigation and order on fixed games of the Greek soccer championship.

    A large number people related to soccer have also been summoned for questioning, including soccer players, who are being questioned.

    According to sources, police have put together a total of 93,000 pages of case files on 93 suspects.

    The investigation is taking place jointly with the prosecuting authorities and the Economic Crime Squad (SDOE).

    The 10 arrestees will appear before a public prosecutor shortly before noon on Thursday.

    [03] Gov't on cruise sector

    ANA-MPA/Deputy Tourism Minister Giorgos Nikitiadis said that the Culture and Tourism Ministry is open to dialogue in order to find solutions to the cruise sector's problems, during his address to the two-day Posidonia Tourism Forum in Athens that winds up on Wednesday.ana-mpa

    Nikitiadis stressed that the ministry is currently discussing with the sides involved in the cruise sector branch, adding that changes will be made where feasible with the aim of boosting cruises and marine tourism, and called for their cooperation.

    He also reiterated that Greece is a destination that should not be missing from the major cruise companies' itineraries. On the cruiseship docking fees at the Piraeus port, the deputy minister said that despite whatever increases the port is the cheapest in the Mediterranean.

    [04] 'Black market' warehouse

    ANA-MPA/Hundreds of T-shirts and other counterfeit brand name items were seized in the city of Rhodes, on the same-day island, when authorities raided a "black market" warehouse and a private home owned by a local businessman, it was announced on Wednesday.

    The entrepreur, who is still wanted by police, was supplying tens of retail stores across the country with counterfeit clothing items. ana-mpa

    A day earlier, police had arrested the suspect's 75-year-old father and 40-year-old sister, owner of a souvenir shop in the Old City of Rhodes where counterfeit items were also found.
