  • [01] PM invites Putin to visit Greece

    ANA-MPA/Greek prime minister George Papandreou extended an invitation to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to visit Greece, during a telephone discussion between the two leaders on Thursday night, according to Putin's press spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

    "The heads of the two governments expressed their high estimation for the current level of Greek-Russian cooperation in a variety of sectors," Peskov told reporters in Magnitogorsk, where Putin is on tour.ana-mpa

    Peskov said that Papandreou expressed appreciation to the Russian side for its cooperation, via the International Mediterranean Fund (IMF) and expressed certainty that the temporary economic difficulties faced by Greece will be soon overcome.

    [02] 74 fires in past 24h

    ANA-MPA/A total of 74 forest fires broke out throughout Greece in the last 24 hours, since dawn on Thursday, and all of them, with the exception of the Saktouria fire, have been contained.

    A wildfire in Saktouria, Rethymno, on the island of Crete, that broke out on Thursday was still on progress on Friday, but there was no cause for concern, according to firefighters.

    A team of 26 firefighters with 12 fire engines, assisted by an 18-strong team on foot, were combating the Saktouria blaze.ana-mpa

    Two fires that broke out at 4:00 a.m. Friday at Apraos on the island of Corfu and at 11:00 on Thursday night at Aghios Nikoloas in Volimes on the island of Zakynthos were contained on Friday morning, the firefighters added.

    [03] ASE opening: Rise

    Equity prices were rising at the opening of trade on Friday on the Athens Stock Exchange (ASE), with the basic share price index up 0.49 percent, standing at 1,194.05 points at 11:15 am, and turnover at 13.658 million euros.

    Individual sector indices were moving upward, with the biggest gains in Health, up 2.22 percent; Banks, up 1.56 percent and Raw Materials, up 1.00 percent.

    The biggest losses were in Oil and Gas, down 1.00 percent; Telecoms, down 0,86 and Chemicals, down 0.49 percent.

    The FTSE/ASE 20 index for blue chip and heavily traded stocks was up 0.58 percent, the FTSE/ASE MID 40 index was up 0.50 percent, and the FTSE/ASE-80 small cap index was up 0.44 percent.

    Of the stocks traded, 35 were up, 13 were down, and 18 were unchanged.
