  • [01] 'Zorba's house' to be turned into cultural center

    ANA-MPA/The house at the Stavros Akrotiri site on Crete, associated with the film "Zorba the Greek" (1964), which was based on Nikos Kazantzakis' book "Life and Adventures of Alexis Zorbas", will be turned into a cultural centre, the Hania City Hall decided on Monday.

    The issue was discussed in the presence of representatives of the International Society of Friends of Nikos Kazantzakis. amna

    A special event entitled “Kazantzakis and Zorba” will be held in Hania in 2012.

    The 1968 Academy Award winning film was directed by Cypriot Michael Cacoyannis, with the title character played by Anthony Quinn. The supporting cast included Alan Bates (Basil), Lila Kedrova (Madame Hortense) and Irene Papas (the Widow).amna

    The film's music and theme song are by Mikis Theodorakis.

    The film won three Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actress (Lila Kedrova), Best Art Direction in Black and White (Vassilis Photopoulos) and Best Cinematography in Black and White (Walter Lassally), and was nominated for four more: Best Actor (Anthony Quinn), Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium (Michael Cacoyannis).amna

    The character Alexis Zorbas is a fictionalised version of a real-life mine worker George Zorbas (1867-1942).
