AMNA--Prime Minister George Papandreou travels to Cannes, France on Wednesday to attend the opening of the G20 Summit, government sources said on Tuesday.

The French presidency reportedly invited the Greek premier to the Summit meeting, which, among others, will discuss developments in the Greek debt crisis. As a result of this development, Papandreou and political party leaders will address Parliament on Thursday, within the framework of a vote of confidence debate scheduled to begin on Wednesday.

On Tuesday morning, Papandreou spoke by telephone with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. He also briefed her on the Greek government’s initiative to hold a referendum, which the Greek premier unexpectedly announced on Monday.amna

According to reports, Papandreou told Merkel that the referendum’s purpose is to help the people embrace the loan agreement decision and contribute to the promotion of reforms necessary to strengthen Greece and Europe.
