  • [01] 'The Pan-Europeanism of Ancient Greek Medical Science in the Middle Ages'

(ANMA)-The second book of the trilogy "The Ancient Roots of Medieval Europe (5th-15th century", titled "The Pan-Europeanism of Ancient Greek Medical Science in the Middle Ages", has just been released by the Museum of the Hellenic Nobel Collection's (MHNC) publications, in a luxurious large size (33x24), 302-page tome.

Hailed abroad as a unique literary, scientific and artistic work, a collectors' item, the treatise has received an Outstanding Distinction from the Academy of Athens and other organisations in the US, Britain and Italy.(amna)

The book, written by MHNC founder and president Professor Giorgio S. Marcou, contains previously unknown and unpublished manuscripts of Latin codes, engravings and rare full-color works of medical contents from Marcou's and the Museum's private collections.(amna)

The unpublished material includes manuscripts of more than 300 Latin medieval codes, as well as the renowned handwritten code of Hippocrates' "Prognostics", which was taught in Europe's first universities from the 14th to the 19th century and is kept at the Marciana Biblioteca (Library) in Venice.(amna)

The tome, prologued by eminent international scientists, further contains statements by 100 international personalities of the 20th century, including heads of state, prime ministers and Nobel laureates, on Greece's accession to the then European Economic Community (EEC, now the EU).(amna)

The sponsors of the book are the Athens Eye Hospital, founded by Gerassimos and Haralambos Rallatos, together with Prof. Panayiotis Zafirakis.(amna)

[02] ND leader meets troika mission in Athens

AMNA -- New Democracy (ND) leader Antonis Samaras and the party's economic officers met on late on Saturday with the EU-IMF troika at the ND headquarters in central Athens.

During the one-hour meeting, which was held in a "good climate", the two sides discussed, inter alia, the issue of cuts in supplementary pensions, although the discussion was not in-depth, according to ND sources.

The same sources said that an issue of cutting the Christmas and holiday bonuses was not discussed during the meeting, and opined that there is no specific proposal on the matter, but just thoughts and discussions at this time.

The ND sources further said that the discussions focused on substantive and also technical matters, and that the ND side presented its firm positions on the issues of taxation and growth.

ND officials present at the meeting, expressing personal opinions, told AMNA that "the ship is slowly changing course", and that it appears that the troika was starting to realise the need for measures that will spur growth and are concerned about a series of measures that have not had substantive results.
