  • [01] Patras residents protest presence of illegal migrants after local man's murder

AMNA / Local residents in the western port city of Patras on Tuesday demonstrated outside a disused textile factory reportedly utilised by dozens of illegal immigrants as a temporary shelter, three days after a local man was stabbed to death by what police charge was a trio of Afghans migrants.

Residents in the area, located in the southern part of the city, demanded a solution to the problem of illegal migrants congregating in the area as part of an effort to sneak aboard any of a number of Italy-bound ferry boat. A new port facility has opened in the southern part of Patras, which is Greece's main hub for maritime routes to Italy.

The victim, 30, was killed in the early morning hours of Sunday after the three Afghans allegedly quarreled with him outside his home. One 17-year-old teen was arrested in the incident and allegedly confessed, while another two suspects are wanted. www.amna.gr

Two of the three illegals, one of whom is also 17, had previously been arrested for illegal entry and residency in Greece. Following their booking they were released and served with a notice to depart the country within 30 days. amna
