  • [01] Unemployment shoots to record 21.9pct in March

    AMNA--Unemployment in Greece skyrocketed to a record 21.9 percent in March 2012, posting a 6.2 percent increase against March 2011 and a 0.5 percent increase against the preceding month of February 2012, according to figures released by the independent Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) on Thursday.

    ELSTAT, in a seasonally adjusted report, said that the unemployment rate in March 2012 was 21.9% compared to 15.7% in March 2010 and 21.4% in February 2012. The number of employed amounted to 3,843,905 persons.

    Ôhe number of unemployed amounted to 1,075,081 while the number of inactive to 3,372,144.

    The number of employed decreased by 342,134 persons compared with March 2011 (an 8.2% rate of decrease) and by 24,996 persons compared with February 2012 (a 0.6% rate of decrease).amna

    Unemployed increased by 294,706 persons (a 37.8% rate of increase) compared with March 2011 and by 21,625 persons compared with February 2012 (a 2.1% rate of increase).

    Inactive persons –that is, persons that neither worked neither looked for a job– increased by 38,751 persons (a 1.2% rate of increase) compared with March 2011 and by 5,350 persons compared with February 2012 (a 0.2% rate of increase).
