    AMNA--The Democratic Left (DIMAR) central committee approved with a broad majority of 70 percent party leader Fotis Kouvelis' proposal to provide a vote of confidence to a cooperation government that will not, however the, include the participation of party cadres.amna

    The meeting was concluded at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.

    [02] Venizelos says gov't will have been formed by noon

    AMNA--PASOK party leader Evangelos Venizelos stated on Tuesday evening that by noon on Wednesday a government will be formed with the support of the New Democracy party, PASOK and the Democratic Left party.

    "The refusal of SYRIZA (the Radical Left Coalition) now renders as the only practical solution the formation of a government with the support of New Democracy, PASOK and the Democratic Left," he said, stressing that the government must be formed as soon as possible, adding that on the basis of the present factors this can be achieved by noon on Wednesday.amna

    As regards the way of PASOK's participation in the government, he said that "for the credibility of PASOK's participation to be safeguarded, however, it is necessary that what we shall do after the elections to correspond with what we were saying before the elections."amna

    He also added that in Wednesday's working meeting that he will be having with the party's Parliamentary Group which, as he said, is being called on to support the new government with its confidence, will specialise democratically as it is entited to PASOK's way of participation.amna

    "The most crucial is not the government's composition but the national negotiating team that will pursue the best possible revision of the loan contract so that we can keep all the positive and do what we must to combat the recession and unemployment, to bring positive growth and employment rates," he said.

    [03] Forest fire in Nafplion

    AMNA--A forest fire broke out at dawn Wednesday Nafplion and spread quickly fanned by strong winds in the area.

    The fire was raging in a forest expanse near the coast of Karathonas, and a strong firefighting team comprising 14 fire engines and their crews as well as two firefighting craft was battling the blaze.

    The deliberations on the formation of a coalition government and the new meeting among New Democracy (ND), PASOK and Democratic Left (DIMAR) representatives on Wednesday, dominated the headlines on Wednesday in Athens' newspapers.

    [05] Athens Stock Exchange opening: Rise

    AMNA--Equity prices were rising at the opening of trade on Wednesday on the Athens Stock Exchange (ASE), with the basic share price index up 1.64 percent, standing at 609.91 points at 11:00 am, and turnover at 8.387 million euros.

    The FTSE/ASE 20 index for blue chip and heavily traded stocks was up 1.96 percent, the FTSE/ASE MID 40 index was up 2.79 percent.

    All individual sector indices were moving upward, with the biggest gains in Travel an Recreation, up 4.80 percent; Public Utilities, up 4.03 percent and Telecoms, up 3.52 percent.

    Of the stocks traded, 41 were up, 6 were down, and 8 were unchanged.

    [06] Action plan to boost competitiveness of olive oil

    AMNA--A series of measures aimed at boosting the competitiveness of the olive oil production sector will be finalized within the next two weeks based on a plan processed by EU Agriculture Commissioner Dacian Ciolos, it was announced on Tuesday.

    The action plan includes measures aimed at promoting the quality of the product, the restructuring of the sector and the protection from third country competition. amna

    A discussion on the action plan took place in Luxembourg on Monday in a meeting between the commissioner and the ministers of agriculture from Greece, Spain, Italy and the rest olive oil producing EU members.amna

    Caretaker Agricultural Development & Foods Minister Napoleon Maravegias stated that "olive tree cultivation is an income source in many, otherwise, disadvantaged regions. The implementation of a public policy with actions that will settle any market problems for such a product, focusing on high quality production, is necessary."

    [07] Greece raises 1.3 bln euros from T-bill auction

    AMNA--Greece on Tuesday successfully auctioned a three-month Treasury bills issue raising 1.3 billion euros from the market at a slightly lower cost. The Public Debt Management Organization, in a statement, said the interest rate of the issue was set at 4.31 pct, slightly down from 4.34 pct of the previous auction of same T-bills.
