    AMNA--The unemployment rate in Greece rose to 26 pct in the fourth quarter of 2012, for an average rate of 24.2 pct in 2012, Hellenic Statistical Authority said on Thursday.

    The statistics service, in a quarterly report, said the number of unemployed people totaled 1,295,535 in the October-December period, up 269,658 in 12 months, for an increase of 26.3 pct. The unemployment rate in the 15-24 age group was 57.8 pct, while among women the unemployment rate was 65 pct. The statistics service also noted that long-term unemployment accounted for 65.3 pct of total unemployment in the country.

    The unemployment rate was 24.8 pct in the third quarter.

    Employment fell 1.5 pct in the fourth quarter, compared with the third quarter of 2012 and by 6.4 pct compared with the same period in 2011, with the number of employed people totaling 3,681,926. amna

    Unemployment among women rose to 29.7 pct in the fourth quarter, from 24.5 pct in the same period in 2011, significantly higher compared with men (23.3 pct and 17.8 pct, respectively).

    Western Macedonia (30 pct) recorded the highest unemployment rate among the country's regions, followed by Central Greece (28.6 pct), Central Macedonia (27.9 pct), Attica (27.8 pct) and Western Greece (27.2 pct). Epirus (25.5 pct), Thessaly (24.4 pct), Crete (23 pct), Eastern Macedonia-Thrace (22 pct), Northern Aegean (21.5 pct), the Peloponnese (20.4 pct), Southern Aegean (18 pct) and the Ionian Islands (17.2 pct) followed through.

    The percentage of new unemployed people (who have never worked before) accounted for 24 pct of total unemployment. The statistics service said that 42.5 pct of unemployed people were seeking full-time jobs, while a 47.9 pct said they could settle with part-time jobs if necessary. Finally, a 9.6 pct sought part-time jobs.

    A total of 107,201 people found work in the fourth quarter of 2012, most of them long-term unemployed, while 196,341 lost their jobs. Employment in the primary sector fell by 2.3 pct in the fourth quarter of 2012, in the secondary sector employment fell by 11.8 pct and in the third by 5.8 pct.

    Part-time employment accounted for 8.5 pct of total employment. Wage earners totaled 63.1 pct of workers in the country, still significantly below an 80 pct average rate in the European Union.
