  • [01] German ambassador's house targeted

Six persons were taken in for questioning in relation with the armed attack against the house of the German ambassador Wolfgang Dolt in the Athens suburb of Halandri at 3.30 on Monday.

According to initial information, the perpetrators used kalashnikov and shot several times at Dolt's house. The police guard of the diplomat's house said that he saw four persons shooting without targeting something in specific.

Police arrived immediately to the spot and cordoned off the area.

Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, who was informed by Citizens Protection Minister Nikos Dendias, spoke on the phone with the German ambassador.

Á police investigation is in progress and the area is still cordoned off. No injuries or damages were reported.

Government Vice President and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos strongly condemned the attack against German ambassador Wolfgang Dolt's residence in the Athens suburb of Halandri early on Monday.

"The Greek government expresses its outrage and outright condemnation of today's cowardly terrorist act with the only aim to damage Greece's image abroad, a few days before Greece's assumption of the EU presidency," Venizelos told the German ambassador. "The immediate mobilization of the Greek police, which gives an effective and coordinated battle against terrorism, will soon bring the perpetrators before the Greek justice," he added.

[02] BoG chief: ‘We must secure the country's economic prospects'

ANA-MPA – Greece's economy has made substantial progress and the country will soon be returning to growth rates, governor of Bank of Greece (BoG) Giorgos Provopoulos said in an interview with Sunday newspaper Proto Thema.

Provopoulos however noted that given that 2014 is an elections year and the positive forecasts "may weaken if not cancelled" if the political dispute intensifies," then it is imperative that " political and social forces be united on a positive plan for the country's exit from the crisis."

He ruled out the possibility of a haircut on bank deposits and underlined that the Greek banks are adequately capitalised.

Regarding the recovery of the economy, he noted that the effort has not been completed yet. "We must cover the last most difficult mile, stabilisation is still fragile," he said.

He underlined that "it is a national demand to safeguard what we have already achieved at huge social cost, to avoid setbacks and to secure the country's economic prospects."
