[01] NATO, UN call for de-escalation of tension after downing of Russian fighterBRUSSELS (ANA-MPA/M. Aroni) -- NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Tuesday urged Moscow and Ankara to use diplomacy to de-escalate a brewing crisis after the downing of a Russian warplane in extreme northwest Syria that the latter claimed violated Turkish airspace, hours earlier."This is a serious situation. This is a situation which calls on that we all are prudent and that we all contribute to de-escalating the situation," Stoltenberg told reporters during a press conference, following an emergency Alliance council meeting. He also said he welcomed further contacts between Moscow and Ankara. "There have been contacts and we would welcome even more contacts â?¦ I look forward to further contacts between Ankara and Moscow and I call for calm and de-escalation. Diplomacy and de-escalation are important to resolve this situation," he added. The Secretary General noted that the Council was briefed by the Turkish ambassador and that he also spoke to Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu. On his part, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for urgent measures to de-escalate tensions following the incident. UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said the UN chief hopes that "a credible and thorough review of the incident will clarify the events and help to prevent future recurrences."
