  • [01] PM Tsipras meets PACE President Pedro Agramunt

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Monday met Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) President Pedro Agramunt, currently on a visit to Athens, and discussed the importance of the CoE's values and principles in facing the current economic, social and security challenges.

Agramunt noted the active and positive contribution of the Greek deputies in PACE, with whom he had excellent cooperation. He also praised the way the Greek people and government were handling the humanitarian crisis.

Tsipras, on his part, said the refugee crisis had shown that solidarity had gone from being a founding principle of Europe to something to be striven for politically and repeated that the EU-Turkey agreement on refugee flows must be implemented without obstacles. As the Greek government had noted from the start, he added, an agreement with problems was still better than no agreement at all.

Tsipras and Agramunt also discussed the Greek premier's attendance of the upcoming PACE session in Strasbourg on June 22.

[02] Greece is experiencing the results of populist delusions, says ND leader

Greece is suffering the results of a populist delusion that led to stifling conditions in the economy and society, New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in an article in Huffington Post, published on Monday.

Mitsotakis is attending an event in Brussels marking the 40-year anniversary of the European People's Party (EPP), on the sidelines of which he is expected to meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

"Populism and demagoguery is our main rival. My country is experiencing the results of a populist delusion that led to stifling conditions in the economy and society," the main opposition leader wrote.

"We are going through a period of acute crisis, the deepest that Europe has experienced since the war. This has enabled some to mock the pro-European message and unfortunately this crisis has offered fertile soil for the seed of discord and intolerance. These have no place in our party," he added.
