  • [01] PM Tsipras calls Renzi to express condolences after Italy's earthquake

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras expressed his condolences to the families of those who were killed in the magnitude 6.2 earthquake that shook central Italy on early Wednesday morning, leaving 38 people dead and numerous injured, in a call to Italy's premier Matteo Renzi.

"We follow the events in Italy with anguish and hope that there are no more victims of the earthquakes. I asked PM Matteo Renzi to convey the condolences of the Greek people and government to the families of the victims. We are ready to assist the Italian authorities in any way needed," the prime minister tweeted.

Renzi will not attend the summit of the Party of European Socialists (PES) in Paris on Thursday to address the aftermath of the earthquake.

[02] Coast guard searching for possible refugee boat off Rhodes

The Coast Guard is searching for a drifting vessel with about 60 people onboard off the eastern coast of Rhodes on Wednesday, following a distress call to the EU emergency number (112).

Authorities said they do not know if the boat was involved in an accident or if there was a mechanical failure, but said they've sent two rescue vessels and a super puma helicopter. Winds blowing in the area are reaching 5 on the Beaufort scale.
