  • [01] Pina Bausch's brilliant 'Sweet Mambo' comes to Athens for the first time

"I am trying to talk about the life that surrounds us, the existence for us. And the problem is that life cannot always be danced to traditional aesthetic forms," the legendary German choreographer Pina Bausch once said to describe her views on art, dance and ultimately life. Bausch broke the boundaries between theatre and dance, becoming a catalyst for the course of European dance.

Retracing her work, the Onassis Cultural Center (OCC) brings on its main stage her penultimate work, "Sweet Mambo" (2008) on November 3-6.

In "Sweet Mambo", six women and three men appear and disappear in an evocative landscape consisting of an infinite forest of ethereal fabric. They communicate through desire and fear, laughter and pain, loneliness and tenderness. In Bausch's universe, linear narrative is superfluous: questions are more important than answers. Everything is possible and everything co-exists in what is a collage of human experiences. It is an absurd and tender universe, violent as well as melancholic: small everyday stories, a brief confession, an invisible gesture, a joyous laughter, a drowned sigh. In her absence, the great choreographer gives us a wink, urging us to explore and embrace the complexity of our existence.

The show is a production by Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch and carries the audience with the music of, among others, Barry Adamson, Rene Aubry, Brian Eno, Jun Miyake, Hazmat Modine, Portishead, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Tom Waits.

[02] Defence minister hails readiness of armed forces, contribution in refugee crisis, ahead of 'Ohi Day'

Defence Minister Panos Kammenos hailed on Thursday the readiness of the armed forces for the defense of independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country, in a message ahead of the "Ohi Day" celebrations on October 28.

He said their stance is important "especially today when challenges to international law and treaties intensify, mainly from Turkey's side," he added.

Kammenos also hailed the armed forces' contribution in assisting with the refugee issue "as required by the centuries-old traditions of our nation - assistance and hospitality."

"The immortal 'NO' reminds us not only of the struggles facing the Greek nation over the centuries, but also the perpetual faith of the Greek people in defending the high values of freedom and democracy," the minister added.

[03] Alpha Bank announces sale of Athens Hilton for 142 mln euros

Alpha Bank on Thursday announced the signing of a contract to sell its equity stake in Ionian Hotel Enterprises SA (shareholder of Athens Hilton).

The bank announced the signing of a final agreement with Home Holdings SA, a member of TEMES SA and D-Marine Investments Holding BV to sell its 97.3 pct majority stake in Ionian Hotels Enterprises SA -a Greek-listed company- for 142 million euros (including a refinancing of an existing loan).

The transaction will be capital neutral for the bank and fully aligned with a restructuring plan's goals, approved by the European Commission in 2015. Completion of the transaction needs approval from competition authorities by the end of the year.

The agreement signals the change of ownership in one of the most famous hotels in Athens. Hilton Athens began operations in April 1963 and it was the first Hilton hotel to operate in Athens.

D-Marine Investments Holding BV is based in Amsterdam, Holland. It is a subsidiary of Dogus Holding SA, a leader in the Turkish and international economy -founded in 1951 with a workforce of more than 55,000- with established presence in eight sectors -financial services, car dealer, constructions, media, tourism, real estate management, energy and restaurants -with more than 330 subsidiaries and affiliates. Dogus Tourism Group was founded in 1976 and operates luxury hotels, restaurants, beach and yacht clubs in Turkey, Croatia, Italy, Spain, US and Caribbean.

TEMES SA is the developer of Costa Navarino, one of the biggest tourism investments in the Mediterranean.
