  • [01] PM Tsipras: Enough with the austerity in Greece

    Eurostat's figures confirm that the Greek economy is outperforming as it has returned to growth, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Wednesday said during a meeting with EU Commission for Economic and Financial Affairs Pierre Moscovici.

    "According to 2017 and 2018 estimates, Greece will have 2.5 percent and 3.0 percent growth rates," he stated.

    The Greek Prime Minister underlined that these results are the result of the Greek people's sacrifices. Tsipras stressed that everyone must acknowledge the importance of these figures and honour the sacrifices of the Greek people.

    Enough with austerity in Greece, Tsipras said adding that a discussion of a one euro more of austerity can be damaging. What we need is relief measures, he stated and stressed the importance of creating an alliance of the reasonable states.

    On his part, Moscovici said that he will work together with Greece. As he said, Greece's results are very encouraging while Greece can have growth of 3 pct in 2018. The Commissioner estimated that things are moving ahead.

    [02] We can't consider Greece outside Europe, President Pavlopoulos says

    Setting Greece's position in the eurozone at risk is as if setting the unity of the eurozone itself at risk, President Prokopis Pavlopoulos on Wednesday said during the decoration of EU Commissioner for Economic Affairs Pierre Moscovici with the Grand Cross of the Order of the Phoenix.

    Pavlopoulos referred to the role of Moscovici in defending the unity of the European Union and the hard core of the eurozone as well as its positive stance on the Greek issue.

    On his part, Moscovici thanked the Greek President for the great honour and stressed that "we cannot consider Greece outside the core of Europe and the eurozone." He also added that Greece has shown courage and promised that he will continue to give the same struggle as he has been doing in the last years.

    [03] Alt.FM Katrougalos to hold meetings in German parliament on Thursday

    Alternate Foreign Minister George Katrougalos will visit Berlin on Thursday where he will hold meetings with the president of the European Affairs Committee of the German parliament as well as with the president of the parliament's Budget Committee.

    Later, he will address a conference organised by the SPD parliamentary group on Social Europe.

    [04] IMF former head economist Blanchard: 7 years already and still no clear/realistic plan

    A report by former head economist of IMF Olivier Blanchard with date 4 May 2010 was posted on Twitter in which Blanchard warned that the Greek rescue programme entails high risk due to the level of the necessary fiscal adjustment adding that it can deviate even if it is fully implemented.

    The letter addressed to Poul Thomsen was presented at the end of January during an international conference of the Canadian think tank centre for International Governance Innovation by the professor of Economy Paul Blustein who made a summary of the situation" Olivier Blanchard warned that the austerity could go awry, even if done to plan. Dominique Strauss-Kahn (then general director of the IMF) broached debt restructuring but Jean Claude Trichet (then head of the European Central Bank) said no.

    "I did not leak but am not too unhappy that it did leak. 7 years already and still no realistic/ clear plan" commented Blanchard on Twitter.

    [05] Farmers' crucial meeting with gov't VP Dragasakis on Thursday

    A delegation of the farmers and livestock breeders are on their way to Athens to meet with government's vice president Yiannis Dragasakis and Finance, Labour and Agriculture Ministries' officials.

    The meeting is scheduled for 16:00 on Thursday.

    "Our 17-member delegation that will participate in the meeting expect from the government to propose some relief measures on the high production cost.

    Meanwhile, farmers continue to keep closed the border post at Evzoni on the Greek-Fyrom borders while farmers from Central Macedonia said that will block the road that leads to Doirani border post on the Greek-Fyrom borders from 15:00 to 17:00.

    [06] No refugees' arrivals recorded for second consecutive day

    No refugees or migrants' arrivals were recorded for second consecutive day on the islands of the northern Aegean.

    Police said that on Wednesday 9,709 people that have sought for asylum that has been not examined yet remain stranded on the Greek islands.
