  • [01] Tonight's teleconference between government and institutions has been cancelled - Digital Policy minister

Digital Policy, Media and Telecommunications Minister Nikos Pappas said in an interview with private TV channel "E" on Wednesday that a teleconference between representatives of the Greek government and the institutions scheduled for this evening has been cancelled.

According to government sources, the teleconference was cancelled because one of the representatives of the institutions could not attend it. The call may be held on Thursday before Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos' departure to Malta for the informal Eurogroup meeting, or he may meet with the representatives of the institutions in Valletta before the meeting.

[02] DESTE Prize Anniversary Exhibition opens at Museum of Cycladic Art

An exhibition marking the 18th anniversary of the biennial DESTE Prize, first established in 1999 to showcase Greece's emerging new artists, will be inaugurated at the Museum of Cycladic Art on Wednesday.

Entitled "DESTE Prize: An Anniversary Exhibition, 1999-2015" it will display works by all nine recipients of the prize so far, which are shown together for the first time.

This collaboration between the DESTE Foundation and the Museum of Cycladic Art forms part of the latter's "Young Views" program that aims to engage a younger audience, bring the public up-to-date with developments in contemporary cultural production, and provide a dynamic platform for the exchange of ideas on contemporary artistic creation.

"The DESTE Prizes and their operation all these years have given us the opportunity to become acquainted with alternating and continued generations of Greek artists, who in recent years have given us answers on how we can deal with the difficulties of the much-discussed crisis that plagues our country. And all of this through a process of dialogue with the international scene, which is at the core of the prize," said Giorgos Tzirtzilakis, a professor at Thessaly University architecture department and artistic advisor of the DESTE Foundation, during a press conference held in the Cycladic Art Museum on Wednesday.

Earlier, the head of the DESTE Foundation Dakis Ioannou had addressed the press conference and thanked the Museum of Cycladic Art for its cooperation, as well as the 60-odd artists that entered the DESTE Prize competitions over the years and the judges on the selection committees.

"The DESTE prizes, since 1999, showcase all that is most modern in what domestic artistic creation has to offer, supporting young Greek and Cypriot artists," said Sandra Marinopoulou, president of the N. P. Goulandris Foundation - Museum of Cycladic Art.

The artists participating in the exhibition are: Loukia Alavanou, Anastasia Douka, Eirene Efstathiou, Christodoulos Panayiotou, Maria Papadimitriou, Angelo Plessas, Georgia Sagri, Kostas Sahpazis, and Panayota Tzamourani.

The exhibition is accompanied by a bilingual catalogue (Greek/English) that honors everyone who has contributed to the prize over the past eighteen years. Established in 1999, the DESTE Prize is awarded once every two years to a Greek or Cypriot artist living in Greece or abroad.

The exhibition will run from April 6 until September 17 and the entrance fee is 3.5 euros. For information on museum opening hours and other information visit the website www.cycladic.gr.

[03] Communist Party makes new wiretapping claims

The Communist Party made fresh allegations of wiretapping on Wednesday, claiming its call center was intercepted today during several phone calls with third parties, including those with New Democracy and the Centrists' Union.

In December 1, 2016, the party had claimed that somebody was listening in to telephone conversations with other opposition parties. An investigation was opened to look into the allegations but so far no information has been published by police.

"Before the investigation conducted by the relevant authorities for the case of wiretapping announced by the Communist Party has been concluded, new repeated interferences at the headquarters' call center were observed, which concern listen-ins with third parties, among whom the call centers of New Democracy and the Centrists' Union," the party said in a press release and slammed the "unacceptable delay" of more than four months in publishing the findings on the previous complaint.

"The government and the relevant authorities must immediately investigate in depth this new serious incident and assume their responsibilities to uncover the perpetrators, which has not been done to date," the Communist Party said, adding that it has informed the other parties, Parliament President Nikos Voutsis and Digital Policy, Media and Telecommunications Nikos Pappas, who is the relevant minister and the President of the Hellenic Authority for Communication Security and Privacy (ADAE), Christos Zampiras.

[04] Mykonos and Greece to host Heineken Champions Voyage

The glamorous and cosmopolitan island of Mykonos in the southern Aegean has been chosen as the final destination of the Heineken Champions Voyage campaign, organised by Heineken and Athenian Brewery, in order to celebrate the final of the UEFA Champions League.

In an event on Wednesday attended by Greek tourism bodies and organisations, participants highlighted the major promotional benefits for Greece and for Mykonos arising through Heineken's global campaign, where 500 selected guests from all over the world will be invited to watch the UEFA Champions League final while sailing on a cruise through Greek seas. Consumers, journalists and international football celebrities will be among those invited to take part in the Heineken Champions Voyage, which will end when it reaches the idyllic "island of the winds," as Mykonos is also known.

Starting this year and for the next three years, when Heineken is UEFA Champions League sponsor, the company will invite selected guests from all over the world to take part in the Heineken Champions Voyage and visit cosmopolitan Mykonos. The initiative is seen as yet another vote of confidence in Greece that will help generate even greater levels of interest in the country as a tourism destination, benefiting Greece's economy on both a local and national level.

Athenian Brewery Chairman Zooullis Mina noted that the company's main concern has been to support the creative and innovative sides of Greece and develop actions that lead to growth.

"Apart from initiatives within the country, the time has come to turn world interest onto one of the most important sectors of our economy, tourism. Through the power of the Heineken brand worldwide but also through the glamour of our UEFA Champions League sponsorship platform, we are placing Greece at the centre of a global event, promoting Greek cruises and showcasing our country as an even more attractive destination for all travellers. We believe in Greece and we are sharing this with the world," he said.

Southern Aegean Region governor Giorgos Hatzimarkos noted that the choice of Greece and specifically Mykonos for the campaign was "no accident" and promised to provide all possible assistance to the event, as did Mykonos Mayor Konstantinos Koukas, who said that the island will present a positive image of Greece. The head of the Greek Tourism Confederation (SETE) Andreas Stylianopoulos noted that the 500 guests on the Heineken Champions Voyage will act as Greece's ambassadors abroad.
