  • [01] President notes need to remember atrocities at Holocaust exhibition

Greece and Europe must not become complacent at the rise of extreme-right movements in Europe and must never forget the atrocities of the Second World War, President Prokipis Pavlopoulos said on Friday, during a speech at the exhibition "I don't forget: One picture is a thousand words", housed at Zappion, central Athens.

"We must never forget […] because we should never ever allow again the nightmare of the Second World War, the nightmares of Nazism, to threaten again the future and progress of mankind. It is our duty to do this, mainly the generation which – in the broadest sense - still has vivid memories of that era," he said.

"We must not assume that the fossils of Nazism, which we see springing up around Europe, are insignificant. They are not insignificant," he added.

[02] ND leader predicts elections in the near future

New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis predicted elections for Greece in the near future saying they will not destabilize the country because his party will win and swiftly promote reforms. He was speaking at an event in Athens organized by the "Economist", titled "The World in 2017 Gala Dinner".

"We believe elections are necessary, but will take place if [PM Alexis Tsipras] loses parliamentary majority or if Mr. Tsipras decides to hold them. In Greece's case, elections must not be considered as an example of instability because, not only will we win them, but we will also promote our reform agenda," he said.

Commenting about the economy, he said that if things continue as they are now, Greece in 2017 will return where it was two and a half years ago. "There has been a lot of damage concerning the country's credibility. It is true the demands of our creditors are excessive but we as a country have lost credibility. There's a very specific program that ends in the middle of 2018. By then, Greece has three options: It may borrow from the markets; it may need a fourth program or, the most disastrous, it may have neither," he said.

Mitsotakis then criticized the government for continuing cronyism. "In Greece and Europe, we hope the central parties in power will manage the satiation with renewal and approaching new social categories. The populist parties take advantage of new voter enclaves. In Greece, a left-wing party shares power with a right-wing party, which shows ideology has disappeared," he said.
