  • [01] PM Tsipras: The aim is to make Greece an international energy hub

    The aim is to make Greece an international energy and transit hub, as a crossroads of three continents, but also a node of peace and stability in a fragile region, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras stressed on Wednesday during a press conference following his visit to the Environment and Energy Ministry.

    Energy is the focus of the development policy for the next day and the environmental protection is a prerequisite for fair and sustainable growth, the prime minister said. Referring to the energy sector he said it could upgrade the geopolitical power of Greece.

    Three contracts for the exploitation of hydrocarbons on two land and one marine plot will be signed on Thursday, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said on Wednesday during a press conference at the Ministry of Environment and Energy.

    Tsipras said it is a significant development and stressed that "the procedures for the exploitation of old and new marine sites are proceeding whether they concern the Ionian or the south and west of Crete, following the strong interest expressed by large energy companies."

    [02] European Commissioner Crețu to visit Chios on June 14

    European Commissioner for Regional Policy Corina Crețu accompanied by Alternate Economy Minister Alexis Charitsis, Deputy Shipping Minister Nektarios Santorinios and general secretary public investments Panagiotis Korkolis will visit the island of Chios on June 14.

    A series of meetings with local agencies with focus the region's development will be held in the context of Commissioner Crețu's visit to the island.

    [03] Sea Days 2017, a panorama of events in the city of Piraeus

    The municipality of Piraeus in cooperation with city agencies and associations organises for third consecutive year the 'SEA DAYS 2017', a festival on the sea, the sports, the shipping, the culture and education and the entertainment.

    The festival started on Wednesday and it will run until Sunday 28 May.

    Sculpture and painting exhibitions, visits to coast guard patrol vessels, tour with the city train to Piraeus attractions, the "Âlue Growth workshop: presentation of Piraeus maritime startups" that will be hosted at Athens Concert Hall and tours with tria Olympias that arrived earlier at marina Zeas will be among the events scheduled for Wednesday.

    [04] Tourism Min Kountoura calls on investors to explore the potential for investments in Greece

    Tourism Minister Elena Kountoura sent a message to investors and businessmen operating in sea tourism development to explore the potential for investments in Greece.

    Kountoura was addressing the Posidonia Events on Wednesday.

    She pointed out that the development of Piraeus port and the upgrading of the country's airports contribute to the further development of the maritime tourism industry.

    Focusing on the government's strategy for tourism 365 days a year, Kountoura said that maritime tourism is particularly important. Indeed, last year, as she said, cruise visitors amounted to 3.3 million.

    With a 16,000 km coastline, and 6,000 islands, 100 of which are accesible, Greece is an attractive cruise destination. Kountoura stressed that the promotion of "marinas" and "home porting" are at the top of the ministry's agenda.

    On his part, Yiannis Retsos, in his first speech as chairman of the Greek Tourism Confederation (SETE), stressed the importance of the security that should be taken into account by companies that want to invest in Greece. He explained that Greece is considered one of the most secure countries, according to surveys carried out at an international level. Referring to the factors that will influence the tourist developments, he mentioned the conclusion of the programme review and the end of uncertainty. He underlined that the country must return to normality and this should not happen with new measures that will plague the tourism industry. Retsos also called for the modernization of marinas and port infrastructure, as well as for the cooperation of all the involving parties in order to meet the needs of a cruise sector.

    [05] 28 refugees found on Ro island; trafficker arrested

    A Frontex vessel located on Wednesday morning 29 people, among them a 19-year old foreign national who is allegedly their trafficker, on the small island of Ro, near the island Kastellorizo.

    They were all transferred to Kastellorizo port. The 19-year old was arrested while an investigation is underway.
