Although, more than 20,000 Greek Cypriots remained in the occupied area after Turkey's 1974 invasion, most have left as a result of a systematic campaign of harassment by the occupation authorities. Today less than 600 Greek Cypriots remain in the handful of enclaves.

There are currently three primary schools in the Turkish occupied northern Cyprus, along with two teachers. A third teacher has recently retired, and one of the schools is left with no teacher, as the Turkish occupying regime does not allow for a replacement because the newly assigned teacher has served in the Cyprus National Guard.

The Turkish occupying regime does not allow Greek History, Greek Geography and Religious Education to be taught at the primary schools, nor does it permit the celebration of Greek national holidays and Greek Orthodox religious holidays.

It is important to know that the Turkish occupying regime has never allowed the function of secondary schools. So, by the age of twele, the children who want to pursue secondary education have no other choice but to leave their families behind, and move to the southern free part of Cyprus. Only during school holidays do these children get in touch with their families. At the age of 16 for boys, and 18 for girls, the children are no longer allowed to visit their families in the occupied north.
