    [01] Municipal elections in Himarra, Albania.

    The second round of municipal elections wound up in Albania yesterday amidst denunciations of the ethnic Greek community in Himarra about violence and rigged elections, where the candidate running for mayor Vasilis Bolanos belongs to the party "Human Rights and Omonia".

    Greek foreign ministry spokesman Panagiotis Beglitis issued an announcement stressing that the incidents was causing particular concern in the degree that the Albanian government had guaranteed smooth elections. He also pointed out that the Greek government would defend in the EU and international organizations the Greek community s democratic rights.

    The results of the elections are expected to come out today. Nevertheless, the general secretary of the socialist party of Albania Gramoz Ruci claimed late night that his party won the second round in the municipality of Himarra.

    [02] NATO exercise - Destined Glory 2000

    Following Turkey s arbitrary intervention not to include the air corridors over Limnos and Ikaria, Greek national defense minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos stated from Thessaloniki yesterday that Greece demands from NATO to bring Turkey to reason, so that what was agreed upon for the military exercise Destined Glory 2000 be restored.

    After an agreement failed to be reached in yesterday s consultations in Eski Sehir in Turkey under the commander of Nato s south wing, air marshal Ronald Kish, the Greek defense minister warned that unless the Greek demand was met, the Greek planes taking part in the exercise would remain grounded.

    He added however that there was time for changes as the air operations were only due to start next Tuesday. Meanwhile, the meeting scheduled to be held in Rhodes and Marmarida yesterday between the Foreign ministers of Greece and Turkey, George Papandreou and Ismail Cem, to cover mainly issues of tourism, was postponed. Turkey announced that the postponement was due to the continuing crisis in the Middle East. Finally, the Greek prime minister Kostas Simitis stated after the informal EU summit meeting held in Biarritz, France on Saturday that a bilateral meeting with the Turkish prime minister Bulent Ecevit would mean something, if could bring positive results in Greek-Turkish relations.

    [03] Athens 2004 Organizing Committee

    Prime minister Kostas Simitis will have a new meeting today with the president of the Athens 2004 Committee Yanna Angelopoulou - Daskalaki on the course of the preparations for the Olympic Games, while the bi-ministerial committee will meet tomorrow on the issue.

    [04] Soaring oil prices

    In Greece, the price of heating oil will cost double than it did last year, as of today. The development ministry issued the indicative fuel prices per zone-147 to 156 Drs per liter-and in an effort to avert profiteering will be issuing a daily price bulletin.

    [05] Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomeos' visit to Athens

    The program of the visit the ecumenical patriarch Vartholomeos of Constantinople will pay to Athens on October 18th includes meetings with prime minister Kostas Simitis, foreign minister George Papandreou, Athens mayor Dimitris Avramopoulos and other politicians, religious leaders and social bodies. Patriarch Vartholomeos will visit the bishoprics of Peristeri and Megarida and also the bishoprics of Thiva and Livadia.

    [06] Express SAMINA shipwreck

    The inspection of the shipwreck of the ferry Express Samina will start on the island of Paros, if the weather conditions allow it. Divers and experts will inspect the ship, while the special magistrate of the court of appeal Nikos Karadimitriou will supervise the inspection as he has been appointed to investigate the causes of the accident.

    Meanwhile, the two new maritime accidents last Saturday have caused a stir in the public opinion. The 45 year old assist cook Michalis Chatzigeorgiou lost his life when the cargo boat Yuton I was being evacuated after the vessel made a 40 degree tilt northwest of Samothrace, while the passengers and the crew of the ferryboat Karystos Express took a fright when the ship went adrift, due to damage of the ship s helm near the port of Lavrio.

    [07] Pension regulations

    The time of military service is not taken into account for civil servants who want to complete 35 years to get their pension, according to the State Council, while according to the Supreme Court, the years of service in the public sector are the years the service is offered voluntarily to the state.
