    [01] Carnival celebrations

The last Sunday of the carnival was celebrated yesterday throughout Greece. The center of all festivities, though, was once again in Patras, where a parade of 40 thousand masqueraders and 250 thousand spectatros started during the mid-day hours and ended with the burning of king carnival, who this year was Jupiter seizing Europe. Similar events and festivites also took place in many other cities and villages throughout the country.

[02] Mass exodus costs the lives to 27 people

Due to the fine weather prevailing in most parts of Greece, numerous city dwellers have left Athens and other big city centers to celebrate the three day holiday of the carnival and Lent Monday in the countryside. However, despite the extraordinary measures taken by the traffic police 27 people lost their lives and 213 were injured in traffic accidents.

[03] Karamanlis against big interests and corruption

In an article published in the newspaper "Kathimerini Tis Kyriakis" yesterday, New Democracy party President declared a battle against big interests and corruption, presenting at the same time his party's proposals.

In the meantime, in an interview with the newspaper "O Typos Tis Kyriakis", Athens Mayor Dimitris Avrampopoulos has launched an attack against New Democracy party leader saying that any talk on big interests was an alibi for failures.

[04] Papandreou to raise Middle East issue in the EU

The Greek Foreign minister Yorgos Papandreou today will bring forward the Middle East problem as a top priority issue in the European Union Foreign ministers' Council.

Tomorrow, Mr. Papandreou will meet with his American counterpart Collin Powel. The two men will discuss about South Serbia and the Balkans in general, Greek-Turkish relations, the Cyprus issue, bilateral relations and terrorism.

[05] Pope John Paul II to visit Greece

The Vatican rejected the article of the Italian newspaper, "Messagero" according to which Pope John-Paul II will visit Greece on May 9 and 10.

According to the Vatican the Pope will wait for the decision of the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece, which will convene on March 5, to decide on the issue.

In the newspaper it is reported that the Pope will come to Greece within the framework of a tour of Syria and Malta, in his capacity as simple pilgrim, with which the Greek church is in accordance.
