THE VOICE OF GREECE 13/9/2001 1:19:00 μμ NEWS HEADLINES Reactions in Greece on terrorist attack against the U.S Money market [01] Reactions in Greece on terrorist attack against the U.SIn Greece, political parties have strongly condemned the attacks, expressing their concern over the day after the terrorist act. Yesterday, the president of the republic Konstantinos Stefanopoulos and prime minister Kostas Simitis met and expressed their concern as well. Prime minister Simitis spoke of "another form of war that no one must accept in any way" and stressed that Greece condemns in the most categorical way these acts. The leader of the major opposition New Democracy (ND) party Kostas Karamanlis who is currently on a visit to Boston, expressed his sorrow and his anger over the multiple terrorist attack against the United States. Mr. Karamanlis noted that these unprecedented acts cause horror and anger among the world public opinion and all sensible citizens of the globe condemn them. The general secretary of the Greek communist party (KKE) Aleka Papariga expressed her sorrow over the attack in a speech in Thessaloniki, saying "We were always crying for the American people, because it fell victim of the leadership of capitalism and imperialism". The leader of the Coalition of the Left Wing and Progress (SYN) Nikos Konstantopoulos stressed that such acts are explicitly condemned and noted that behind these incidents are forces which are acting so as to defame the democratic struggles against the nations and the citizens.Meanwhile, Archbishop Christodoulos of Athens and All Greece has sent a letter to the American president G. Bush, expressing the deepest condolences of the Church of Greece. In another development, prime minister Kostas Simitis and the leader of the Cypriot Socialdemocratic party Yannakis Omirou met in Athens yesterday and discussed the latest developments on the Cyprus issue and Cyprus accession course to the European Union. Mr. Omirou also met with the speaker of the Greek parliament Apostolos Kaklamanis. In statements after their meeting, both officials expressed their abhorrence and their sorrow over the unprecedented t errorist attack in the United States and also their concern over the eventual impact. After the terrorist attack in the United States, the Cypriot president Glafkos Kliridis returned to Cyprus, since the plane that was taking him from Zurich to New York did not head for Canada, as the airports of the country had temporarily been closed. President Kliridis was going to participate in the New York talks on the Cyprus issue. [02] Money marketEuropean money markets reacted with relatively calmly while on the contrary, the Asian money markets had great losses. The New York stock exchange will remain closed till next Monday.
