[01] Bush determined to win the war against terrorism

The biggest manhunt in US history is focusing on the possible role of Saudi dissident Osama Bin Laden as people around the world mourn the thousands feared killed in the terror attacks on New York and Washington. However, an American official stated that more than one organization could be involved in the attacks. From its side, Afganistan maintains that Saudi Arabian Osama Bin Laden has refused any involvement in the terrorist attacks against the USA and made an appeal not to be hit. In the meantime, the inhabitants of Kabul have begun digging trenches in an attempt to protect themselves from a possible attack, following Pakistan s decision to cooperate with the USA against terrorism.

At the same time, US President George W. Bush described the struggle against terrorism as "the First World War of the 21st century" and committed himself to win it. However, USA allies rejected an article by The Guardian, according to which a plan for an attack against Afganistan already exists, while American Defence Secretary Donald Ramsfield pointed out that Bin Laden s involvement had not been proved yet. According to the American authorities and the secret services, 50 Arabs and Americans of Arab descent suspected to have been involved in the attacks have been arrested. Additionally, it has been proved that at least 27 of those involved in the attacks in New York and Washington took training lessons in the USA on how to fly planes. Meanwhile, international flights have begun in the USA. 3 airports however closed when threats for terrorist attacks were made. Regarding the black box flight recorder found in the crashed plane in Pennsylvania, it was discovered that it had no recordings in it.

The American President George W. Bush from his side appeared sure that the USA would win that war, while air bases are on a 15-minute alert for fear of more air attacks. Defence Secretary Donald Ramsfield is thinking to ask from the American President to call thousands of reserves into action, a decision that has not been taken since 1991 when the crisis in the Persian Gulf took place. At the same time, for security reasons Vice President Dick Cheini settled in Camp David, while the American President stayed in the White House. In the evening, the police evacuated the Capitol in Washington when the Congress was convening after a packet suspected to be a bomb was discovered.

In the meantime, the fire that burnt in the Pentagon rekindled and firemen managed to put it under control after many hours. About 190 people lost their lives in the Pentagon, 64 of which were on board the passenger plane that crashed into the Pentagon. On a relative development, the American Ministry of Defence announced that two days after the attacks, 126 people working in the Pentagon at the time of the crash are reported to be missing. Rescue teams are focusing their efforts now to discover the black box flight recorder of the plane so as to get more information on the high jacking of the plane. The Mass Media in New York have reported that rescue teams are struggling to rescue 10 policemen thought to be alive under the rubble of the World Trade Centre. According to local Mass Media, one of the policemen called his wife with his mobile phone and told her that he was alive and was trapped with some of his colleges in some part of the ruins.

The number of those missing after Tuesday's devastating attack on the World Trade Centre in New York has climbed to nearly 5,000, while hundreds of grieving relatives await news of their loved ones. More than 180 dead have been discovered, while about 3,800 injured have been reported. According to the Athens News Agency, ethnic Greek Michael Taroou, a steward of the crashed United Airlines aircraft, is among the dead, while 27 year-old Greek-Cypriot Ioanna Achladioti and John Katsimadides, who worked in the World Trade Centre are reported to be missing. Moreover, Greek government spokesman Dimitris Reppas stated that information was being collected on 8 ethnic-Greeks, who had not come into contact with their relatives so far and who were working in the twin skyscrapers.

Meanwhile, Greeks flags in all public services buildings will be at half mast, while a three minute-silence will be observed at 13:00 hours in all services of the public sector for the victims of the attacks. Finally, the Greek Foreign ministry described the activation of NATO article No 5 as proof of solidarity among NATO Allies.
