[02] Simitis to announce modernisation of political system

Prime Minister Costas Simitis is expected to announce his proposals regarding the modernisation and reforming of the political system after a cabinet meeting scheduled for today.

The most impressive of a series of measures will be that of a feedback control of MPs' means test.

Regarding political money, Mr Simitis appears determined to impose strict check and transparency rules.

Besides, in the afternoon the PASOK Executive Bureau will meet for the first time under its new structure.

Meanwhile, government spokesman Christos Protopapas pointed out that the discussion would continue and there would be an extensive exchange of views with all political parties, calling at the same time the New Democracy party not to avoid holding a dialogue.

From its side, the New Democracy party commented that the transparency issue should not be used ostensibly and occasionally by the government, adding that those who until yesterday maintained that the issues of in transparency and interlaced interests do not exist cannot convince anyone.
