    Sunny and pleasant weather for most parts of the country with partly cloudy skies and a chance of sporadic showers in eastern Macedonia, Thrace and the northern Aegean. The weather will improve in these areas during the evening hours. Temperatures in Athens from 22-32 C and in Thessaloniki from 19-29 C.

    [02] Summer vacation exodus continues

    The summer vacation exodus is continuing on both national highways without any major problems. Thus far, nearly 200 thousand automobiles have passed tollbooths on the two national highways. Meanwhile, ships departing from the ports of Piraeus and Rafina are almost at 100% capacity. The traffic police have programmed special measures in order to facilitate traffic flow.

    [03] Dimitris Gravalos wins 400 meter race in Tambere

    Dimitris Gravalos from Thessaloniki won the 400-meter race at the 17th European Championship in Ratina, Tambere. The young athlete from Kalamaria won the first medal for Greece finishing at 46.74 beating his own record of 46.83 from last year

    [04] Public Works Ministry measures for illegally built homes

    The Ministry of Urban Planning and Public Works is proceeding with a series of measures for the legalization of thousands of illegally built properties. The favourable measures include significant reductions in fines that will range from 6 thousand to 30 thousand euro that may be paid in 48 monthly instalments. The procedures for the inclusion of the first residence have been completed in 10 areas of Attica and eight prefectures throughout the regions

    [05] Surpise visits to open-air markets by Deputy Minister of development

    The Deputy Minister of Development, Kimonas Koulouris conducted a surprise visits to open-air markets in Argolis and Nafplion this morning. Mr. Koulouris mentioned he witnessed many price fluctuations and reiterated the government will be remorseless with profiteers.

    [06] US soldiers killed in Iraq

    Three US soldiers were killed and four wounded today in a greneade attack at a children's hospital at Baquba, 50 km north of Baghdad.

    [07] Earthquakes jolt Japan

    A number of strong earthquakes hit northeastern Japan today, injuring over 420 people, causing landslides, power blackouts and forcing nearly 2,500 people to evacuate the area.

    [08] Quakes rock Turkey

    A number of moderate earthquakes rocked western Turkey including the city of Izmir today with no reports of deaths. Earlier in the day, two quakes measuring 5.0 and 4.1 hit the area of Denizli. Another dozen or so quakes were also recorded according to the Kandilli observatory in Isatnbul.

    [09] Phillipine coup plot

    The Philippine army went on high alert today as President Gloria Arroyo ordered the capture of up to 70 rogue junior officers and armed deserters after days of rumors about a brewing coup.
