[02] PM Simitis meets with Hungarian President, Ferenc Madl

Hungarian President Ferenc Madl urged Greek political leaders and businessmen to invest in his country after it joins the European Union next May following his meeting with Prime Minister Simitis. Greece, which had long been the only NATO and EU member in the Balkans, has been a strong supporter of bringing the former East Bloc countries into the two organizations. Hungary became part of NATO in 1999, and next May will be one of 10 new countries joining the EU. Greek communications, banking and food companies have already made major investments in Balkan countries and other parts of eastern Europe over the past decade.

Today, Madl also met with Greek industrialists and opposition party leaders, Mr. Karamanlis, Mrs. Papriga and the leader of the Coalition Party, Nikos Konstantopoulos. Mr. Madl's official visit to Greece ends tomorrow.

[03] PM's contacts today with cabinet members

Following the latest opinion polls and the recent social measures announced by the government, Prime Minister Simitis met with the general secretary of the Pasok party, Mihalis Chrsisohoidis, the ministers of the interior and the press, Mr. Skandalidis and Mr. Protopappas and the deputy minister of the press, Tilemahos Hytiris.

[04] Forest issue to be discussed tomorrow

In the midst of strong reactions from opposition parties the cabinet tomorrow will discuss the bill concerning the forest area issue. The bill is expected to clarify which areas are considered forest plots and which not thus paving the way for the legalization of thousands of structures. The new law will define forest areas and set out instances in which the protection of such areas may be lifted.

[05] Electoral law discussed- ND, Communist and Coalition parties abstain

With the participation of representatives from the Pasok and Coalition Parties the biministrial council met today with the Minister of the Interior, Kostas Skandalides in order to discuss the new electoral law.

Abstaining from the dialogue were New Democracy, the Communist and Dikki parties. Mr. Skandalides criticized the ND party for denying to participate in the dialogue and reassured that the government will present the electoral law's plan during the next biministrial meeting.

[06] Cyprus issue to be discussed in NY

The upcoming actions of the United Nations with respect to the Cyprus issue will be at the center of talks to be held between the President of the Cypriot Republic, Tasos Papadopoulos and UN secretary general, Kofi Annan in New York.

During his arrival in New York today, Mr. Papadopoulos stated the Greek-Cypriot side is prepared for negotiations, without rules and preconditions, following an invitation from the UN secretary general.

At the same time, Foreign Minister Giorgos Papandreou is also at the UN headquarters in NY where he will have contacts with his counterparts from other countries including Turkish Foreign Minister, Abdullah Gul.

    [07] Professors continue strike

The climate remains critical with respect to the continuing strike by tertiary education teachers and professors. This evening's meeting between professors and the Minister of the Economy, Nikos Christodoulakis is considered critical concerning the pay increase issue. University professors insist on receiving the raises they had agreed upon, 20% in two "installments", while the government is attracted more towards a 7% increase.

[08] Bush, Schroeder bury Iraq dispute, troops elusive

U.S. President George W. Bush and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder laid to rest their dispute over the Iraq war today but the U.S. quest for foreign troops to share the burden of occupation remained elusive. Bush and Schroeder met on the sidelines of a U.N. General Assembly session dominated by the Iraq issue and told reporters their past differences were over. Schroeder made outspoken opposition to military action against Iraq the centerpiece of his re-election campaign last year, infuriating Washington. The German leader pledged economic assistance for reconstruction and training for Iraqi police and soldiers in Germany, but not peacekeepers on the ground, saying German forces were fully stretched in the Balkans and Afghanistan.

[09] Hamas rejects talk of ceasefire with Israel

The Islamic militant group Hamas today rejected calls by more moderate Palestinian leaders for a ceasefire with Israel and said it would not hand in its weapons or join the Palestinian government. Hamas founder Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, who was wounded in an Israeli missile strike earlier this month, briefly emerged from hiding to make his comments in a mosque after Israeli troops killed a Palestinian youth during a raid in the Gaza Strip. His remarks further dimmed hopes that militant groups will soon be disarmed under a U.S.-backed peace "road map" which has stalled after making little progress towards ending three years of Israeli-Palestinian violence.
