  • [01] As of 1 January 2006 New Objective Values

    28 Dec 2005 15:36:00 (Last updated: 28 Dec 2005 21:41:39)

    By Vicky Keleri

    Sources: ΝΕΤ

The Greek Ministry of Economy announced at midday the new objective values on real estate. The new values are to come into force as of 1 January 2003. In particular, in Attica, the objective values on real estate are to post an average rise of 27.67%, in Thessaloniki the average rise is to be 31.27% and 27.03% for the rest of Greece. However, contracts for purchase, donation and parental grants can be drawn up based on the existing objective values by February 28, as long as the transfer petition is submitted to the Tax Offices by the end of 2005. A spokesman for the Ministry of the Economy described the rises as rational, pointing out that they are to bridge the gap with market values, since the objective values had remained unchanged since March 2001. The Economy Ministry aims to clear the air regarding house purchase, to put an end to tax evasion, as well as to the unjustifiable rises that have been recorded over the last years. As of the new year, further changes, including implementing VAT in the newly constructed buildings, the rise in the tax relief by 15% for first house acquisition and new higher tax relief for parental grants, inheritances and donations, are expected on the real estate taxation. The new objective values for real estate are posted on the website of the Ministry of Economy.

    The New Objective Values

The biggest increase in objective values is recorded in Ioannina, Chios, Corfu, Arta and Cephallonia.

Moreover, the smallest percentage increase is recorded in Herakleion, Rethymno, Lefkada, Serres and Arkadia.

In Attica, the most expensive areas are the 2nd department of Athens and Vouliagmeni, with maximum zoning price at 6,300 euros per square meter.

Elliniko is the area with the highest percentage of increase by 70.54%, with lowest zoning price at 1,200 euros and highest at 2,250 per square meter.

Apart from the transfers, the new objective values affect the following:

Revenues of natural figures declaring incomes from real estate by the readjustment of business real estate value and of great real estate. The taxpayers who file under it will pay more, while due to the increase of real estate value many more real estate owners will be integrated.

Moreover, renters and owners will pay increased council tax and real estate tax, which will be paid at the Public Power Company (PPC).

    Reactions

Commenting on the new objective values, PASOK MP responsible for Economy Vaso Papandreou spoke of an "inconsistent policy" by the Government in the real estate department, which burdens citizens and has led to the "artificial increase of prices and enlargement of sales, purchases and transactions."

KKE described the new objective values as "a ring on the chain of the Governments measures leading to the bloodletting of peoples incomes and sacrificing the cover of housing needs of employees at the altar of the capitals interest."

SYN spoke of a high percentage increase "burdening low classes and working peoples residence areas, and is unfair and in complete opposition with the need of tax redistribution of burdens."

In an announcement, the Hellenic Property Federation (POMIDA) stated that taxpayers have not learned the new zoning price of their real estate and will wait for the announcement of the comparable list with all the new and old zoning prices, as well as the time for the next readjustment in order for concrete conclusions to arise. Moreover, it proposed that the new objective prices to be implemented as 1 March 2006.

[02] Unrelenting Spot Checks in the Market Selling Expired Products

    28 Dec 2005 18:29:00

    By Vagelis Theodorou

The inspectors of the Development Ministry are detecting deception cases of consumers, as they are carrying out intensive spot checks in the markets. In Varvakios Market, 360 kilos of pork meat from the Netherlands were found in a truck and confiscated, as the origin stamps had been changed. The two traders were referred to the Prosecutor. At the same time, inspectors of the Piraeus Prefecture located a multitude of sanitation violations in two super markets. Their shelves contained expired brioche, cherry juice, cocoa, cheese, sausages, pasta and delicatessen products, mouldy vegetables, rusty cans of beverages and hundreds of products without labels in Greek, while insects were found in storage room. In the meantime, in Larissa, a 10-year-old girl found a compact piece of fungi in a fruit juice. Its parents informed the relevant Authorities and the batch was recalled from the super market. In closing, faulty medical equipment was found in Larissa and Karditsa hospitals.

    Unsuitable Medical Equipment

Once again, insects, hairs and several kinds of foreign bodies were found in IV drips, syringes and catheters of Greek and foreign origin.

At the Larissa General Hospital, two catheters with hairs and mosquitoes were found, while in the Karditsa General Hospital a foreign body, possibly paper, was found in an IV drip bag.

Moreover, at the Farsala Health Centre, after the mosquitoes in catheters of French company Mentor, hairs were found in another batch. In the same Health Centre, an IV drip was not used on a patient, since its content was unsuitable.

The faulty batches will be sent to the National Organisation for Medicines (EOF) and the importing companies will be appear at Justice.

The Sanitation Authorities of the country advised nursing and medical personnel to conduct stricter checks before the use of equipment to patients, since foreign bodies cause infections.

[03] A Study by US Researchers Vitamin D Fights Cancer

    28 Dec 2005 15:39:00

    By Vagelis Theodorou

Vitamin D proves to play an instrumental role in the battle against cancer, claimed an American study, which was much based on previous studies. Researchers from the University of Columbia noticed that the vitamin in question, which is normally produced in the skin after exposure to sunlight, and it can also be obtained from certain foods, can reduce the risk of developing breast, ovarian and colon cancer by 50%. Actually, the daily intake of 1,000 international units (IU), that is 25 micrograms of the vitamin, reduces the risk of colon cancer by 50%, and of breast and ovarian cancer by 30%. However, the researchers did not fail to underline that taking big doses of vitamin D should be advised by the doctors only, since high concentrations of vitamin D can cause damage to the kidneys and the liver.

    [07] Basinas Moves to Liverpool

    28 Dec 2005 12:18:00

    By Ilias Papaioannou

Greek football ace Angelos Basinas is most likely to play for Everton as of 2006. Basinas is to fly to England to undergo all necessary medical checkups. It is the final talks that keep former Panathinaikos player away from his dream to play for a foreign football club. As per information, Liverpools team is ready to offer him an 80 thousand euro deal. Should his transfer to the British club becomes true, Otto Rehaggel, the German coach of the Greek national football team, will be particularly happy, since Basinas has been out of action for quite some time. What is more, Angelos Basinas is likely to be playing against his former team-mate Olisadebe. The serial of his transfer to Portsmouth will probably end well, since the gold mean between him and the English club was found yesterday.
