    04 Mar 2006 10:15:00

    By Dimitris Alexopoulos

The great escape of Athenians for the long weekend of the Carnival and Shrove Monday has reached its peak. The Traffic Police is on alert to facilitate excursionists, while according to data, there is a 20% increase in this year's escape. There is also increased traffic on both national road networks, but no serious problems have occurred. Meanwhile, airport security personnel announced a new 24-hour-strike as of 11:00 on Saturday, however flights are performed as per normal. The Federation of Greek Security Personnel will convene at 21:00, in order to determine its future actions. Late on Friday the employees stopped their collective actions, protesting over the recent redundancies of airport security personnel, as the First Instance Court deemed the strike illegal and excessive.

    Increased Market Inspections

Meanwhile, market inspections have increased and 710 Kg of bad seafood and 1260 Kg of defrosted seafood, sold as fresh, were impounded on Friday.

Despite all, consumers are rushing to the Varvakeios Market to buy seafood for the long weekend.

The Consumers General Secretary of the Development Ministry, Thanasis Skordas, said in statements that the Varvakeios Market has abundance of products and a wide range of prices.

However, he called on consumers to check prices and look for quality goods that do not cost much.

According to calculations, seafood and Lenten products are sold 8% higher compared to 2005 and prices vary according to quality.

Frozen squids are sold 3 to 7 euros a kilo, while fresh could reach 18 euros. Frozen octopuses range from 6 to 12 euros and fresh reach 14 euros.

Frozen shrimps cost from 3 to 10 euros, fresh from 25 to 40 euros, while halvah costs from 3.5 to 9 euros a kilo and fish roe from 7 to 20 euros.
