  • [01] For the Easter Holiday Excursionists on the Go

    21 Apr 2006 10:26:00 (Last updated: 21 Apr 2006 13:39:25)

    By Mary Lou Tzempelikou

The getaway of the city centres residents for the Easter holiday is continuing. The holidaymakers are travelling to the countryside and islands in one of the biggest getaways of the last years. Traffic is increased at the exits of the National Highways, while the Traffic Police is on alert facilitating the drivers and securing their safe transport with continual checks. Many residents are travelling on boats, airplanes, trains and KTELs, which has resulted in full bookings and busyness in ports, airports and OSE and KTEL. Drivers should be extremely careful at the Maliakos Gulf, from Agios Konstantinos onwards, where traffic is diverted due to works under construction. Regarding the weather, which is the holidaymakers main concern, meteorologists are expecting scattered thunderstorms in the central and north of Greece, while northern winds will cool down the temperature on Holy Saturday.

    Emergency Measures

In some cases, vehicles can pass free from national highway tolls, due to the increased traffic.

On Holy Thursday, it is estimated that buses departed from the KTEL station, on Kifissos, every three minutes towards every point of Greece, while extra routes were scheduled so that all travellers can arrive to their destination.

More than 3,500 flights are scheduled at Eleftherios Venizelos airport from 17 to 30 April.

In the meantime, Traffic Polices emergency measures are being enforced.

On Holy Friday, traffic of trucks above 1.5 tonnes is banned in all national road networks from 8am to 1pm and on Easter Monday from 3pm to 11pm.

    The ban excludes:

-Road service vehicles -Press delivery company vehicles -Hellenic Post trucks and -Vehicles transporting perishable products.

The following measures will be implemented at Kakia Skala, on the Athens-Corinth National Highway:

On Easter Monday and Saint Thomas Sunday an extra traffic lane will be used from 1pm to 10pm in which only private and emergency vehicles will use.

The traffic of vehicles towards Corinth will be made by the other traffic lanes or by a diversion through the old Athens-Corinth Highway, from the Megara junction to the Kinetta junction.

The measures will not be enforced on Easter Sunday and Saint Thomas Sunday.

    [02] Thirty-Nine Years Since 21 April 1967 Black Anniversary

    21 Apr 2006 11:13:00

    By Mary Lou Tzempelikou

On this day, Holy Friday, thirty-nine years have passed from the day that the colonels "crucified" democracy setting the country under their rule for seven years. In his message to the Armed Force, Minister of National Defence Vangelis Meimarakis described the dictatorship as "one of the saddest periods of modern Greek history," noting that "the struggle for defending the ideals of democracy [] and human dignity is continual and always up-to-date." In its message PASOK noted "democracy was not presented to the Greek people" but was a result of self-sacrifice, adding that democracy is achieved by a collective effort, international cooperation and the continual defence of social rights. "The dictatorship reminds us that the domination of plutocracy and the active participation of the country in imperialistic organisations are irreconcilable with peoples rights," stated KKE in its message, while SYN added "the message of the anniversary is that the fight for democracy needs to be continual and is directly interwoven with peace."

A fire, which broke out on the dawn of Holy Friday, at the Ano Liosia refuse dump, is in development. As per the Fire Service, the fire broke out in a heap of old tires and quickly spread, while, even if it is not vast, its extinguishing is difficult due to the materials alight. Water-carrier trucks and a helicopter are assisting the task of 36 firemen.
