The Pakistanis went Monday to the polls to vote for a new National
Assembly. Initially scheduled for early last month, the elections were
cancelled after Bhuttos assassination. Journalists who got a close view
of the vote said there several problems and violence that stopped many
voters from casting their ballots. Preparing street protests, the
opposition parties spoke of vote-rigging.
After casting his ballot, President Pervez Musharraf called for
reconciliation and said he is willing to cooperate with whoever wins
the elections. With Musharraf partys popularity plunging, the
opposition parties are highly likely to earn the majority in the new
National Assembly. In that case, they may get engaged into a drive to
topple Musharraf.
