    Olympic Flame Lighting

    All is ready for the Olympic Flame Lighting ceremony in Ancient Olympia that will commence at 11:00. Maria Nafpliotou, the High Priestess will light the Olympic Flame in the presence of the President of the Hellenic Republic Karolos Papoulias, the political leadership and representatives from China and the IOC. Additional security measures have been taken in the area, as Tibetans are going to stage a protest on the continuing occupation of Tibet by China. The IOC President has stated that he will be responsible for a secret diplomatic mission to China on the Tibet issue.

    The events commemorating 25 March national holiday will commence with a parade in the centre of Athens at 11:00 Monday, while a military parade in the presence of the President of the Hellenic Republic Karolos Papoulias will take place Tuesday.

    Prior to the parade, Education Minister Evripidis-Stylianidis , who will be representing the prime minister and the government, will lay a wreath at the Unknown Soldier monument.

    In view of the parade, the Traffic Police will take extra measures, while cars will not be banned from using Stadiou, Panepistimiou, Vas. Olgas. Vas. Amalias, Sygrou and Vas. Georgiou streets.

    [03] US Soldier Death Toll Hits 4,000

    Four more US marines were killed in an attack in Baghdad on Sunday, raising the number of the US marines killed in action in Iraq to 4,000, since the US-led invasion to Iraq five years ago. The four soldiers were killed by a road bomb in southern Baghdad. At the same time, Al Qaeda second in command chief Aiman al-Zauari has asked for attacks to be launched against Israel and western targets in retaliation to Israeli attacks launched against the Gaza Strip. His speech was posted on Al Qaeda and other Islamic organisations sites.

    Oil prices in Asian Markets have dropped amid concerns that a slowing US economy will cut crude demand. In Singapore, light crude for May deliveries has been subsiding Monday morning by US$1.41, closing at US$100.43 per barrel from Thursdays US$101.84 price in New York. Brent North Sea crude dropped by US$1.03 to US$99.35 per barrel. Last Wednesday, light crude dropped by about US$5, while investors are concerned over a slowing US economy. Mitsubishi Corp analyst Tony Niewnan believes that oil prices may stabilize to US$100. Meanwhile, the Market in Tokyo slid slightly today, while Nikkei Index dropped by 2.84 points, closing at 12,480.09 units.
