    A tragedy took place at 4:30 in the afternoon in Nea Makri. A 68 years old house tenant shot and killed a 60 years old man who represented the house owner. He was accompanied by two police officers and was about to deliver to the tenant a judicial decision for eviction. When the tenant opened fire the police officer returned the fires and killed the tenant. Further investigation has been ordered on the case.

    Mr. Karamanlis, speaking in a Symposium initiated by the International Greek University of Thessaloniki on the challenges of global economy branded the support of weaker social groups in the new era of financial and global energy environment with the non stop food and oil rises, an issue of democracy and social justice. Mr. Costas Karamanlis stressed that within this environment, governments have to co operate in order to exercise an effective financial and social policy. Each progressive country owes to have a strong and competitive economy, owes to promote changes and reforms investing in education and research. The Greek Prime Minister sent a message of peace and co operation for all countries of South Eastern Europe saying that our county is supporting its orientations in values and principles in the European Union proving in action the respect in human rights, in international legality and in the principles of good neighboring. In a direct reference to Irish "no" in Lisbon Treaty, Mr. Karamanlis spoke of dystocia from the part of some European members and stressed that as far as Greece is concerned, the European Union is the force of common future for the whole European continent. In the same Symposium, minister of Education Evripidis Stylianidis noted that in the following days a bill regarding post graduate studies will be voted in Parliament and pointed out that the governments goal is to turn Greece into a regional and international Educational center.

    [03] On Zahopoulos' Case

    Lawyers Kept in Prison Before Trial

    The two lawyers who are involved in Zahopoulos case are kept in prison waiting for trial. According to the accusations the two lawyers participated in the blackmailing case of former secretary of Ministry of Culture Christos Zahopoulos. The lawyers were acting as mediators of the 35 years old woman. They are accused of participation in suicide attempt, blackmailing and violation of personal data. The lawyers deny any involvement. It must be noted that the 35 years old woman main accused is also kept in prison before trial.

    Illegal "Betting"

    is investigating the legitimacy of 19 regional radio stations and websites which seem to be involved in illegal 'betting'

    According to investigation conducted by the Special Control Service in cooperation with Greek Organization of Ffootball prognostics SA (OPAP), illegal betting is flourishing in Greece. The investigation is targeting at finding web sites and radio stations that promoted and advertised foreign betting companies. 19 radio stations in regional Greece as well as websites seem to be involved in the promotion of advertising bet messages of five advertising companies in Athens. All evidence has been sent to Athens Prosecution Office.

    [05] Actions by "Doctors of the World"

    "Give Sound to their Silence"

    "Doctors of the World" plan important actions on the occasion of the Global Day against Drugs and on of the programme "Roads of Athens", supporting drug addicted people. This programme is targeting at the reduction of damage and at the provision of first medical aid and psycho social consulting to this drug addicted social groups. A briefing campaign will start in order to sensitize people with the slogan: "Give Sound to their Silence"! Actions and cultural events organized by Athens Prefecture will present the results of actions taken during the last 10 years. "Doctors of the World" will give a press conference on Tuesday 24 at 12:30 in IANOS book shop. Within the last 10 years of the programmes operation, "Doctors of the World" have offered help to more than 25.000 drug addicted people.

    [06] Fire Fronts Abate

    Fires that broke out in many areas of our country are abating. Most dangerous fire fronts were reported in Achaia, Menidi, Melandedri and Argolida. Civil Protection Service is warning civilians to be extra cautious in the countryside as there is danger of fire break outs due to strong winds. A fire is burning now a remote mountainous area in Pella, Greece. Fire brigade forces have arrived and are now trying to put the fire under control. Residential areas are not threatened. Meantime, according to weather forecasts, strong winds of six to seven Beaufort will blow on central and North Aegean area but will gradually abate. A slight rise of temperature will be reported in Western Greece.
