    Rhodes: Strong Quake

    A strong earthquake of 6.3 magnitude struck off the island of Rhodes, 445km southeast of Athens at 06:26 on Tuesday. The quake was at a depth of 68 km in the Aegean sea off Rhodes the Athens Geodynamic Institute said. A woman, 56, lost her life of fatal head injury, after she slipped in her attempt to flee her house. Guests were evacuated from a hotel in the city of Rhodes, which suffered cracks, till a crew of prefecture civil engineers carries out inspection. There was also some minor damage to the airport and avalanche on the Pylonas- Lardou provincial road without interruption of traffic. Short power cuts in some regions of the island were immediately restored. Residents remain out of their houses as they are panicked from the length and strength of the quake. The earthquake was felt on the east coasts of the islands of Crete, Santorini and Samos. Dodecanese Islands Prefect, Yiannis Mahairidis and Rhodes Mayor, K. Hathiefthimiou said that the earthquake was strong and of long duration.

    In the opening game of the Olympic Basketball Qualifying Tournament 2008, Greece had an easy win over Lebanon as the 119-62 result indicates. At the last blow of the whistle 6 Greek basketball players had achieved two digit figure points ( Papaloukas 10, Bourousis 13, Fotsis 14, Printezis 10, Tsartaris 15, Diamantidis 12). European Champion 2005 from the very first minutes of the game indicated that it would easily defeat Lebanon. The last minutes of the game were very difficult for Lebanon while the Greek team failed to satisfy fans request for a three point shot. The Greek men now must beat Brazil Tuesday night to keep their hopes alive. Referees: Davis (US), Perez (Spain), Xia (China). Scores at each ten minute period:32-17, 54-27, 86-41, 119-62

    Civil Protection Secretariat on Tuesday issued fire warning category 4 for the following regions: West Attika, Piraeus, Eboia, Boiotia, Fthiotida, Fokida, Halkidiki, Pellis, Kilkis, Larissa Magnisia, Thesprotia, Preveza, Aitoloakarnania, Korfu, Lefkada, Kefallinia( including Ithaka), Zante, Korinthos, Elia, Ahaia and Messinia.

    Local and Prefecture authorities of the above regions are on alert while citizens are advised to be particularly careful

    [04] Work Stoppages: OSE-Suburban Train

    The Hellenic Railways Federation is staging three two-hour work stoppages ( 06:00-08:00, 14:00-16:00 and 22:00-24:00) on Tuesday. Suburban train services from Doukissis Plakentias to the Airport will be suspended during the work stoppages. Passengers to and from E. Benizelos Airport can be served by the EXPRESS bus lines. There will also be changes in the Hellenic Railways Train services while the public can get information dialing 1110. Passengers, who have prepaid tickets, can either get money refund or change it for another date. Work stoppages will also be staged on Wednesday and Thursday during the same times.
