    Pope Benedict XVI Appeal

    18 Ιουλ 2008 19:19:0

    By Katerina Ioannidou

Pope Benedict XVI arrived in Australia yesterday, his first visit as head of the Catholic Church. In his speech before Jewish and Muslim leaders he called on people of all religions to unite against "sinister and indiscriminate forms of violence", interpreted as a reference to terrorism. "In a world threatened by sinister and indiscriminate forms of violence, the unified voice of religious people urges nations and communities to resolve conflicts through peaceful means and with full regard for human dignity", the Pope said.

As the Pope said the catholic Church was open to learn from other religions, a comment that echoed as a message of reconciliation and improvement of relations with the Islamic world. He said that the church is seeking for opportunities to listen to the spiritual experiences from other religions, adding that it recognizes Australias respect to multiculturalism and religious freedom. Finally, he underlined that religion is rather a force of unity than a cause of division.
