    Six Dead in Perama

    Six people dead, 2 missing and 4 injured so far is the toll of the explosion during repair works of "Friendship Gas", at the Perama Shipyard. Two of the dead have been identified,one of them is the second captain while the other four workers have not been identified yet. The four people injured, who managed to survive the explosion, have been transferred to Thriasio Hospital and are out of danger. They suffered burns to their face and have respiratory problems. Three fire engines, one fireboat and three tugboats joined efforts to put out the fire fueled by the explosion. In the meantime, the safety engineer and work supervisor were arrested last night on charges of not meeting safety standards. SYRIZA spoke of unacceptable work and safety conditions in Perama Shipyard and attributed responsibilities to all government policies till present.

    [02] Close to Direct Negotiations Agreement

    Hristofias-Talat Meeting Today

    Cyprus Republic President, Demetris Hristofias and Turkish-Cypriot leader, Mehmet Talat during their meeting at 11:00, on Friday, are expected to reach an agreement to hold direct negotiations for joint formulation of plan aimed at overall solution of Cyprus issue. UN Secretary General new special adviser on Cyprus, Alexander Downer is to visit Cyprus on Sunday.

    Turkish-Cypriot leader had expressed his intention for direct talks with Cyprus President since September during an interview with CNN Turk. The official announcement will be made after their meeting while according to Reuters direct negotiations aimed at viable solution of Cyprus issue will start in September. In a recent interview with Cyprus state channel RIK, Mr. Christofias stressed that political equality should be a basic element for the resolution of Cyprus issue, interpreted as effective participation of the two communities in the government of the federal state.

    [03] Crude Oil at $125.5 per Barrel

    Oil Prices Stabilizing

    Transactions in Asian markets this morning indicate stabilization in oil prices as investors appear concerned over drop in world demand for oil. In early transactions this morning for September delivery contracts, light crude had a slight rise of 2 cents to $125.51 per barrel from $124.49 yesterdays NY closing. Brent oil also recorded marginal 11 cents rise to $126.55. In the meantime, NY Stock Market recorded significant losses at yesterdays closing as Dow Jones industrial average fell over 280 points.

    [04] "Myrtidiotisa", Ferry off Kythira

    Struck on Rocky Islet

    Passenger ship "Myrtidiotissa" en route to Kythira from Neapolis struck on a rocky islet off Kythira port. Passengers and vehicles safely left the boat which remains at Kythira port, having suffered three cracks in the engine compartment. There are no reports so far on the extent of fuel leakage.

    [05] Fears for More Victims

    China: Mosque Collapse Kills 7

    A mosque under construction in northwest China has collapsed, killing at least seven people with others possibly buried under the rubble, "New China" news agency said. The accident happened on Thursday in a town in Qinghai, province which is home to more than 18,000 Muslim ethnic Hui people. "About 20 people received injuries of different degrees and the casualties may increase as more people could be buried in the debris," "New China" news agency quoted rescuers as saying.An investigation into the accident, which happened just a few days before the building was due to be completed, was under way.
