    Deputy Public Order Minister P. Chinofotis praised the polices methodical work in solving Mylonas abduction. Four of the abductors, including V. Paleokostas, the mastermind of the abduction, are detained at Thessaloniki police headquarters. Two of the abductors were arrested in Thessaloniki and one in Chania. Meanwhile, the police is examining whether the abductors had more associates. Mr Chinofotis praised

    The History behind the Arrest

    .As per information, the police managed to arrest the abductors, after arresting a 28-year-old member of the gang in Chania. The man was carrying part of the marked banknotes Mylonas family had paid the abductors.

    A few hours later another accomplice of Paleokostas was arrested in Thessaloniki. The 27-year-old man had rented an apartment that was later transformed to the abductors stronghold.

    Paleokostas and his accomplice were arrested on the above residence, where the police discovered arms, hand grenades, cartridges and part of the 12million euros paid to the abductors. Paleokostas is accused of masterminding the abduction of Giorgos Mylonas, head of the Northern Greek Industries Association.

    [02] Moving Reception for "Silver" Olympic Champions

    Greece received "silver" Olympic Champions on double light skull rowing Vasilis Polymeros and Dimitris Mougios, Chrysa Biskitzi and Alexandra Tsiavou on the same discipline for women and 10th Giannis Christou on scull. The athletes were received with a warm welcome by the state, ECOFINS, fellow athletes, relatives and friends at Eleftherios Venizeslos airport. The ECOFINS technical advisor called the five members of the rowing team heroes. Sports Secretary General Stavros Douvis thanked the athletes on behalf of the state, stressing that the state will stand at their side.

    [03] Focus on Fuel

    During their morning meeting at Maximos Mansion Thursday morning, Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis and Development Minister Christos Folias discussed the fuel issue. The two men also discussed the PMs imminent meetings with social partners and productive classes next week. The minister hailed the petrol station owners decision to suspend their mobilizations, adding that all can help in smoothing the fuel market. Although monitoring the fuel market constantly, he said that there is a long way ahead of them. Meanwhile, the board of the Petrol Station Ownerss Federation has met today to discuss ceiling prices on petrol.

    Supply of Market with Oil Normalised

    The Petrol Station Owners Federation has asked for the setting of the highest oil price for consumers on the basis of the highest profit margins for oil companies and petrol station owners at its meeting today.

    Meanwhile, petrol stations in Crete are back into track today, as petrol station owners decided yesterday evening to suspend their mobilizations, following assurances by oil companies that their legal profit will be secured.

    Furthermore, at his meeting with the Greek Chambers Association Mr Folias asked anew that fuel prices are frozen in September, following agreements on the freezing of fuel prices in the summer.

    From his side, Association President Giorgos Kassimatis stated that any rises that will take place in September will be below inflation.

    Finally, PASOK spokesman G. Papakonstantinou stated that the credibility of promises and effectiveness of actions on the high cost of living is reflected in the consumers' pockets.

    [04] Fire in South Rethumno

    A fire, that broke out in Drymistos settlement in the prefecture of Rethymno this morning, is still raging. The flames approached yards of houses, however, only an old house was damaged thanks to the rapid arrival of firefighting forces. Two water bomber helicopters stationing on the island of Crete as well as Canadair aircrafts from Athens and all land firefighting forces on the island of Crete are trying to put out the flames which are continuously rekindling due to strong winds in the area. Fire fighters have created safety zones but the Drymistos settlement had to be evacuated for preventive reasons. Fires are also raging in farm and forest lands in Kastrosykia-Preveza, Aktio and Nikopolis.

    [05] Scholarships to Low-income Farmers' Children

    An amendment on the Agricultural Development Ministry draft-bill concerning stock breeding issues provides for scholarships to children of low-income farmers and subsidies to stockbreeders for the purchase of animal food during periods of crisis. Specifically, the ELGA organization will grant scholarships to children of farmers, stockbreeders, beekeepers and fishermen provided their attending tertiary education studies in fields related to the agricultural sector.

    [06] Ecumenical Patriarch Visits Mt Athos

    Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew arrived in Mt Athos today and was received with all solemnity. He will stay there until 26 August 21, 2008 to attend the festive events commemorating the death of the second owner of Donysios Monastery Saint Mithon 500 years ago. Mr Bartholomew is being accompanied by Meteropolitans of Austria, Michail; Pavlos of Drama and Apostolos of Moschonisia. Metropolitan Tirgovistiou Nithon will arrive in Mt Athos on Friday.

The Secretariat has briefed the state services and self-governments of the respective areas to be on alert.     [08] Crime in Rethymno

    In an affray between two families near Gerakari, Rethymo in Crete, an elderly was killed and five were injured. The two families met at Gerakari, Rethymno at 04:00 today. As they had property differences, they quarreled and then a member of the family shot and killed an elderly of the other family. Then an affray followed in which five were injured, three of which seriously. The injured were then hospitalized.

    Under adverse weather conditions, ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games gold medalist in Womens 20km Walk ended ninth at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games breaking a new Pan-hellenic record 1:27.54. Her previous record was 1:29.12. Evangelia Xinou won the 25th position with 1:32.19 and Despina Zapounidou 41st with 1:39.11.

    Kallinikos Kreanga of Greece made it to the 16 of the Table Tennis Mens Single competition. Despite a poor first game, the Greek champion downed Jun Mizutani of Japan 4-1 and booked a ticket for the next round. He will play against Chinese Lee Man who also hammered Bojan Tokic of Slovenia 4-1.
