[01] 27-Member Block Agrees on Resurgence Plan
The 27-member block reached an agreement on Wednesday evening on the
resurgence plan for the economy, amounting to 200 billion euros, that
is 1.5% of the EU's NGP, reported Italian Prime Minister Silvio
Berlusconi. Mr Berlusconi told journalists after the European leaders'
dinner that focused on recession and efforts for resurgence "we all
agree". Being asked as to whether the agreement concerns the target
1.5% goal of the GNP, he replied positively. "We have supported banks,
took initiatives to the support of companies, now all depends on the
civilians' stance," he added. Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme
confirmed this piece of information. "At first we say yes, but we shall
have the text Friday", said Mr Leterme, answering a question on whether
an agreement had been reached. In addition to the measures aimed at
tackling the financial crisis, the EU Summit Meeting, which is
concluding in Brussels today, with the participation of Prime Minister
Kostas Karamanlis, dominating is climate change and the ratification of
the Lisbon Treaty on which the 27-member block had reached a political
agreement.
Addressing the European Popular Party yesterday, Mr Karamanlis
reiterated the importance of the EU's collective response to the global
financial crisis having as a priority the measures in support of
low-income earners. Meanwhile, Poland appeared satisfied with the
French Presidency's latest proposals regarding the European plan on
climate change, which according to government sources "it achieved its
goals."Poland, Germany and Italy were mostly reacting to the plan,
mainly due to the dependence of the energy sector on coal.A little
earlier, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi had stated that he
was also satisfied, adding that Italy would have its demands met. Only
Germany has not illustrated whether it is satisfied with the French
Presidency's proposals.
