[01] Papandreou Requests Elections in September.
PASOK President George Papandreou called for the holding of early
elections in September during his speech at the party's National
Council first meeting after elections for the European Parliament. The
aim is to have a new government with a fresh mandate to negotiate with
the EU the country's exit from the financial crisis. Mr. Papandreou
also proposed agreement for Mr. Papoulias re-election in the post of
President of the Republic in parallel with the holding of early
elections. Immediate was the government's spokesman response.
PASOK president repeated that the main opposition party will support
Mr. Papoulias re-election to the presidency office if he himself wants
it and stressed that today's President of the Republic has highly
honored his post.
Mr. Papandreou underlined that early elections will appoint a new
government which will set a trustworthy budget for 2010 and draw a new
course of hope and restructuring of the country.
Mr. Papandreou underlined that results of elections for the European
Parliament indicated demand for change of policy. He described the
following months as crucial for the country and referred to PASOK 100
days program which has three axes: restructuring of economy, protection
of peoples' income and a tough battle to combat corruption and support
transparency.
In an immediate response government spokesman Evangelos Antonaros said:
â Mr. Papandreou once again attempted to involve the President of the
