Greek Justice Minister mr Anastassios Peponis finalised his visit in Tirana signing with his Albanian counterpart mr Fresari an important agreement for the bilateral cooperation.
The two ministers signed an agreement for the
execution of judicial decisions in each other.It is reminded that a number of Albanian citizens are being detained in Greek prisons. Mr Peponis said that President Berisha responded positively to the opening of three primary minority schools in areas where the Greek minority lives.
The Greek minister was also received by the Albanian President mr Shali Berisha and the Prime Minister mr Alexandr Mexi with whom he exchanged views on the crisis in exYugoslavia. Mr Berisha characterised greek concern on the eventuality that the war is expanded to the south of the Balkans as legitimate.
Greek Foreign Minister mr Carolos Papoulias will visit Belgrade tomorrow to have talks with President Milosevic of Serbia.
Mr Papoulias who is to host a tripartite meeting of the foreign ministers of Greece, Bulgaria and Romania next week, had last week met his Russian counterpart in Soche, Russia. It is expected that the three ministers who will meet in Gianena, West Greece will mainly discuss issues of regional cooperation as well as the developments in Bosnia.
Today when asked about a statement by President Clinton of the US according to which stability in the Aegean Sea is a priority for the US foreign policy mr Papoulias characterised mr Clinton's concern on the issue as granted while referring to the resignation of the Archibishop of North and South America mr Iakovos said that mr Iakovos will continue offering to Greece which ever position he has.
Despite the protests by the employees of the shipbuilding unit, Greek government announced today its intention to go on with the clearup of the shipbuilding unit in Elefsina, near Athens, which stopped working after a decision of Peratikos group which owns the unit since the 1992 privatization.
The government said that the clearup will be held with the unit in operation and the employees fear that this will be the end of the industry which owes about 15 billion dracmas ($60 million).The opposition called on the government to secure the operation of the unit and the jobs of the employees while PASOK MP and exminister mr Theodoros Pangalos who is elected in the area of Elefsina, called on the Prime Minister to set a session of the cabinet so that the policy on the shipbuilding industry is defined.
FYROM's Minister of Defense, mr Blagoye Hadjinski expressed today in an interview with greek journalists optimism for the resumption of the greek - FYROM talks in New York. Mr.Hadjinski maintained that in his country and in Greece has matured the view that the bilateral dispute must be solved as soon as possible and at the same time expressed the belief that "the preconditions have been created by mediators Vance and Nimetz for the restarting of the process for the solution of the problem".
Meanwhile, mr.Hadjinski was intrasigent on the issue of the name adding that FYROM does not claim Greek history and past and also it does not maintain that its citizens are descendants of the ancient Macedons.
He said that the people of FYROM are slavs who came to Macedonia in the period between the 4th and 5th centuries and got the name "Macedonians" from the region's name, adding that they have no other name by which to be called. Mr.Hadjinski underlined that the cooperation with the greek Ministry of Defense is of "great importance" to his country and will contribute in maintaining peace and stability in the region, as such a cooperation is desired by the United States. He also added that FYROM is ready to begin such a cooperation "as soon as the two countries establish diplomatic relations".
He also attributed to a misunderstanding the content of an article published in the newspaper "Nova Makedonia" of Scopje according to which he appears to have stated that is more to the interest of Greece a stable and independent FYROM than a Greater Serbia. He clarified that his statement had as follows "If a solution is not reached soon in the framework of the Contact Group and if there is a direct confrontation between Croatia and Serbia in Eastern Slavonia then we should worry for a possible distabilization of the whole region. Under those circumstances, the north-south communication corridor will get a new meaning. Then both FYROM and Greece should show an interest in reopening this corridor as soon as possible. For this reason, I believe that Greece knows that an independent and stable FYROM is necessary for the stability in the Balkans, in order to be able to participate in the process of the european integration while at the same time the agelong and traditional corridor of communication will be opened for ever".
A camp of peace is organised for the weekend of August 19-20 in the area of Lake Doirani in the border between Greece and FYROM by Thessaloniki's Committee for International Detente and Peace in cooperation with the respective committee of the city of Kilkis. During the two-day camp will be held speeches and discussions on the situation in the Balkans and on the protection of the environment while cultural events will also take place.

Police in the sea resort of Edipsos arrested a bulgarian couple accused of baby trade. According to police, 23-yearold Kristov Yiantsa and Kristina Panayiotova were selling babies for the price of 1 million drachmas.
